Water in oil syndrome. Replaced head gasket and 90 miles later major rod noise. 140,000 miles. This place has decent prices, just looking for some feedback on them if poss.

water in oil

I'm wondering if the engine has had the typical timing chain guide failure, which allowed the chain to eat throught the aluminum timing cover and expose the waterpump jacket. This would sure account for water in the oil and could be easily missed.

don't know about them, but $1600 for a long block and 3 year unlimited milage warranty doesn't sound bad to me.

These engines are so cheap and easy to rebuild I don't know why you would buy a rebuilt one. You can get a full kit from engbuldr.com for like 350 and if your head is okay then you can get it rebuilt for about 200 with new valves and then about 200 for machine work on block and crank depending on the shape of things. That is half of your $1600. And with that kit your get the steel timing rails.

Once water gets in the oil passages, that can spell the end for your motor.

I agree that $1600 is more than what a rebuild costs. I don't know if that's with our without core, but they're definitely making some money, which is to be expected. For the time it takes *me* to rebuild a motor, I don't think I could sell 'em for $1600.

DEFINITELY get some info from people who have had those motors. Remans seem to vary a lot in terms of quailty (I had one that blew up rings at 70k).

You can do a quality rebuild and I mean back to 200k mile specs for $800 or so, but it requires a lot of attention to detail, a good machinist, and patience... It usually takes me a month to rebuild a motor, most of that time is waiting on parts to be cleaned, machined, or parts to come in in one form or another.

Also remember that 3 year warranty probably doesn't cover the major cost and headache - which is install and removal.

Think about doing your clutch while you're in there..
