The reason you never had to change dist cap or plugs and wires is because diesels don't have any ignition system. You probably didn't have to clean your throttle body or MAF either as there is no air valve on the intake.

 

I tend to agree but have no data to back up my assertion.

I think the problem comes from the use of "imperial" gallons by our Canadian friends - i.e. 5 quarts to a gallon.

So 28mpg = 28/4 miles per quart = (28*5)/4 = 35 mile per IMPERIAL gallon

Still - the question is if going from 21 to 28 is worth the effort involved.

The other question is if the "performance" of the 2LTE is similar, better or worse than the venerable 22RE?

Also in the mix is the new "ease" of doing a 3RZ swap (gas - later Taco 4cyl) that may yeild similar MPG gains (gearing dependent?) and better power and fully KALI legal and ODB-II etc...

 

Hijack!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanna talk VW Diesel not Toyota diesel in a toyota truck. I know a Toyota diesel will work fine as that is OEM equipment. They have never sold Toyota diesels in Canada and I think North america so it will cost a fortune to have and keep a toyota diesel on the road here. There is a guy near me that has a 82 toy truck with a diesel and wants 4 grand for it. Big time joke in my opinion that is why a VW diesel, I think, is the way to go. Cheap, available and good engines to start with.

 

Not enough power for the weight.

 

Upgrade the turbo and push 15-20 psi, factory 1.6l can handle 22-24 psi without mods. it should bring the hp up to around 120 with 170-200 ft lbs. Plenty to drag around a 4runner

 

Up the boost, intercooler, upgrade the intake, downpipe and exhaust and upgrade the fuel system, and you will have alot more power and still be as reliable as the 22re.

I think its a great idea, i want to do it myself as soon as i get this car out of my garage!!!

The 1.9 TDI swap has been done and is very feasible. Doing it myself is one of my long-term goals with my 4Runner.

I just installed a 1982 naturally aspirated 1.6L. VW diesel into a Kut-Kwick mower-tractor. It's just as awesome as it sounds. I was going to upload a quick video, but .mp4 files are not compatible with this forum.

 

Being a watercooled VW guy I would highly recommend doing one of these swaps. I'd love to see more of these in yotas then the gutless paperweight that is the 3VZE. I don't personally own a TDI powered VW but there are lots of platforms these are swapped into from older Golfs/Rabbits/Jettas to Vanagons and others. They can be tuned/modified to make some pretty awesome power; and more importantly, torque figures. A buddy of mine used to tow his jet skis with his TDI Jetta wagon which didn't bat an eye at it. Darkside Developements in the UK mods a lot of the VAG diesels with some pretty impressive numbers. They even have a Golf running a 1.8 4cyl diesel with compound turbos making 560 lb/ft of torque!
