I will be doing this swap very soon and was wondering if anyone else has done it before? What problems they had and how they liked the performace of it. Mine will be a 1.6 TD.

 

The 1.6L diesel into a pickup or 4runner? Uhh...

 

is that going to have enough power to pull a 4runner around?

 

If you're talking about the 1.6L turbo diesel from a 1992 Passat, it ain't gonna cut it.

I've heard of the 1.9L swap, but they also chip those to get close to 250-300 ft-lbs of torque.

 

the 1.8 is good for a samurai.

But for something like a 'Runner it's too weak.
How 'bout a 2.5 TD from a Mercedes benz?

 

It is a 1.6l from a jetta. I think the numbers are around the same. The stock 22RE is 107hp and 141f/lb. I think I can match that with some tuning on the pump and turbo. All the VW guys say that over 100HP is no problem for that engine. The torque will go with it as it is a diesel. I am doing this for economics not to race it. I think that the 22RE is a great engine but I would like the mileage from a diesel. Everyone always wants more power, for what I don't know........35mpg or better sounds like a better goal to me. Oh ya it is going in a extra cab 4X4 truck.

The 1.9 rates at 90hp and a bit more torque then the 1.6. 1.9 would be better but they are more expensive to get parts for and hard to get as well. I have one in my 98 jetta.

 

VW engines(just like all diesels) are very de-tuned from the factory. I'm sure if you put a little bit of money into the exhaust and computer, you'll have it purring real good.

Remeber with a diesel, as long as you up the amount of air, you can just keep pumping more fuel into them.

I wouldn't expect the thing to fly, but I bet you could get it preforming quite a bit better than the stock 22RE. And hey, it's a Diesel!

Couple of different versions there

 

The liberty diesel is a better option imho, the VW needs to have forced induction or builtup to achieve enough power tomove the heavier toyotas. A mid 80's/early 90's runner or truck would be able to use the VW better as they are lighter.

 

And the best thing is fuel injection with No Computer!!!! Mechanical Injection Pump!

 

better swap is to use the diesel that Toyota put in that chassis (see previously posted link)

 

Ya but try getting parts. If I was that rich I would just go buy one. Also the milage will not be much better then the 22re

 

Members on the toyotadiesel list CLAIM to get in the 30-35mpg range for a 2LTE conversion.

My 22RE got 19/21 as EPA and REAL WORLD for over 350K to gas logs to prove it.

 

Still, how many miles do you have to drive to make up fro the $4000 motor, and then having the block rebuilt?

I looked at getting a 2L-TE for my 4Runner when I had my 3.0 rebuilt.

$4000 for a motor with 225k miles on it.
plus another $1800 or so for the rebuild kit.
Then another $500 for the machine work.

$6300 will pay for a 3.4 swap, and buy you a CRAPLOAD of gas.

 

My 2L-T in 2wd/5sp factory stock truck only got 22 in town...28-30 if you have a REAL lite throttle foot on the freeway(65 mph-not more) Sorry I sold it now, coz it had gobs of torque & never changed dist cap/plugs or wires once!! Oil filter was only available from dealer for $22 !!

 

Many of the diesel converters do it for running biodiesel...

Its not "cost effective" per se - but then again neither are alot of the mods people do for 'wheelin....

 

If you are interested in vw diesel engines you should spend some time reading at http://www.vwdiesel.net/ There are some really helpful guys there. With a giles modded pump and tuning you could easily have enough power to pull a yota around(Maybe even quickly *gasp*). With tuning you should easily be able to make 22re hp with more torque. If/when you starting modding, a good intercooler, pyrometer, and boost gauge are a must. Have fun it really is a great little motor.

I spend a lot of time over there at vwdiesel.net. There are a lot of canadian guys there to so help is not far away. I read a good post on another diesel site. A guy put a 1.6 in a regular cab 4X4 with 35" Mudders and jacked way up. He did a very very nice job. He is using it for rock crawling though so does not need much HP just low end torque for rock walking. I will definatly be putting an intercooler, I have a 1.9L pump for it and a K03 turbo from a 1.9. I think it will work good for what I want. I will start a new thread on here once I get started and show my progress.

 

I can assure you that you will NOT get 35mpg out of a 2LTE. I know coz I got a factory fit. UK imported 4Runners are called Surfs and they are fitted with 2.4 or 3.0 diesels, (and a small number of 3.0 V6gas). I got a 2.4 diesel, I fitted my own intercooler and the best milage I get is 28mpg.

VW used the Toyota 2.4 in some of their commercial vans in Europe.

Anyone that claims to get 35mpg from a 2LTE in a 4Runner are talking total rubbish. 2tons of truck with the aerodynamics of a house brick does not make for high milage
