Anybody thinking about a DIY snorkle

I just ordered one of these from this guy on e-bay he is asking $45 for them but I did the offer and got one for $35 bucks shipped to my door with his free shipping.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Snork...item2303790ae7

I am thinking with the screws on either side I may be able to find a air filter to fit inside the top and then a another one down the tube where the AFM box is it would be double filtered.

I plan on doing a passenger side set up on my 22re when I get everything I need for it so stay tuned this could get interesting.

This thing is built very nice well worth the $35 bucks and cheaper and easier to find then an ARB one.

so what about when it rains???

can ya just turn it around so it's not getting rain sucked in goin down the highway???

i wanna run a snorkel on my '92 4runner (3vz) but it would have to come up the driver side a-pillar...and i wanna mount a police cruiser spot light there! LMAO!

of course i think the snorkel gives off the "cool" factor a lot more and would be more useful than another set of lights lol.

i wonder if he'd take a $30 offer? lmao

try the offer button you may get lucky

If you look you can see there's a slit in both the front and back of the tube, that is built into it so that the rain/water has an escape/drip rail just like ARB so it don't go through the entire system.

I am considering turning it backwards when I get it all together just to be different and to see if it will make any kind of difference on the air intake.

Those are the same tops that Safari Snorkel (ARB) used for years. They didn't make them, they bought them from a mfg. (Donaldson iirc) I'm not sure about the new curved ones they use now, but I know the older ones were.

i dont get how the slits in the front and back keep the rain from going down the system... Wouldnt the water just get sucked down past them anyway? Great find tho..I also will make an attempt at this DIY snorkel..i locked my last v6..lol

Those slits are for flex I think. So you can stuff it into another pipe.

How does a snorkel work in the rain? It seems like it's just going to suck in water and defeat the purpose of a snorkel.

Yeah that's what I've heard from all the land rover guys who run around down here, "Just spin that b**** around and go-get-'er."

yeah you were right about the parts being made from a mfg, just go to donaldson.com youll see what all they got, i would rather use a donaldson Top Spin, its a pre-cleaner and prolongs the life of your normal air cleaner, and its like a lil hat instead of a scoop...

These snorkels are supposed to have either some holes in the back or a slit across the back. The reason is that water is heavier than air so it is slower to change direction. So when you are driving down the road the small amount of water that does enter will not be able to make the sharp corner and it will hit the back and run out the holes. At least that is how the ones on big rigs work. That said, I don't see the water escape on this model.

The snorkel tube sticks up through the ram and past the slits, the rain goes through the screen and hits the sides of the ram, rolling down past the tube and drains out the slits.

An added benefit of the unique Safari Charge Air Ram is that it can be rotated to any position. This means great peace of mind for those who plan to travel in cold or high altitude conditions where heavy snow falls are anticipated. By rotating the air ram to face away from the prevailing wind/direction of motion, the air ram delivers additional protection from the choking effects of snow build-up inside the air intake.
You don't need to turn the ram around unless driving in HUGE rain for extended time or in the snow, the snow tends to pack up against the screen blocking air flow.

The pic shows the newer style Safari curved ram, but the principle is the same with the style shown by the OP.
