i just got the lower intake off last night, PITA to get to some of the bolts, but i got to 'em.

i got the new gaskets, should i seal them with black RTV?

 

I have heard people say yeah use RTV on gaskets and no don't use it. Personally I didn't use it on anything that already had a gasket when doing my head gasket replacement a couple months ago.

I had a massive vacuum leak whenever I failed to use RTV on the lower intake to head gasket. Mechanic sealed it up with black RTV and that seemed to do the trick.

 

I always use a very very small amount of RTV on most all gasket surfaces. Usually put a light coat on the gasket with my finger. Just my 2 pennies.

 

It acts like a lubricant and can actually cause a gasket to squeeze out of position. Get Permatex spray gasket adhesive. spray both sides of the gasket and allow it to "tack up" this will provide sealant and help hold things in place during assembly

 

If you put a small amount of RTV on a gasket and let it set up it will not "lubricate" the gasket at all. The 20-25 small block chevys and 3 22r engine rebuilds I have done have all had RTV used on gasket mating surfaces where I felt I needed a litte more than just the gasket to secure a tight fit. I wouldn't think twice about using it.
