Is that an Antenna in the rear window???

My 1995 yota 4 runner that we just bought and put a motor in is running great and my kid drives it to school everyday. We put a new radio in it with an ipod connection and realized that antenna was broken. I was about to spend $30 bucks for a new power antenna mast and then read about the taco whip conversion. Then I see what appears to be an antenna in the passenger's side rear window? Are there wires running to the dash for that connection? I did notice when we put the antenna in that there were two antenna wires but they had different plugs on each end so I just connected the one that fit my radio. Can I get an adapter to change that other end over to the style I need and make that other connector work and use the antenna in the window instead of the mast? Just wondering ???

I think the rear window antenna is for AM. The power mast / whip up front is for FM.

I believe what your talking about is a defroster just like the tailgate glass. I have one on mine too. Defrost's that side glass.

It's a defroster so you can see to change lanes. Make sure you get the right part numbers for the whip mod. The one you want is Toyota Part # 86300-35070 (2nd gen 4Runners)

The antenna in the side glass is called a "diversity antenna" As far as I know, it does nothing to defrost the glass.

I don't know if you can use just the diversity antenna, but some folks have used adapters to hook both antennas into aftermarket stereos. Could be worth a try if you don't find a more definitive response via searching.

Good luck-

ya it's definitely an AM/FM antennae. when i broke my power one i just ran with the window one. bad reception but it works...stick a whip in though, and you'll be happy. ditch that power crap....useless junk.

Well that tells me what I need to know. Thanks Guys! I won't try it then, I'll just go for the taco whip swap.

I bought a replacement power mast on ebay for $20 or $25. I put an interrupt switch in the power-up wire from the power antenna relay located just above the brake pedal.

Now my mast stays down unless I flick my toggle switch while the radio is on.

I did this because I liked the nifty factor, and also because of some perverse sense of anticipation of the day when i forget to lock the antenna down and break it off again while wheeling.

When that happens, I'm sure i will freak out and then get a whip.

My power antenna is still going after almost 9 years and it's wired into my Alpine to go down when the radio is off which works great since I just use the iPod when off road
