Just cause I want to


So I've been struggling trying to figure out the average MPG of this truck afer the massive engine rebuild, and I finally managed to keep my driving relatively civil for the last tank and here's what I came up with



I filled up from completely emtpy... no lie, I was worried I wasn't going to make it to the gas station, lol

I filled up again from roughly the same point, and put 15.209 gallons in the tank.

Between those fillups, per my odometer trip, I went 300.2 miles, BUT, the 31" tires are throwing the speedo off, SO, I had to get a little more info using my GPS, and then dig into my brain and try to remember some of that "crap" I learned back in school



After filling up, I reset the trip on the GPS, and the trip on the odometer in the truck.

I drove home, and then up to the parts store because I noticed as I was backing into the driveway and up to the garage, my reverse lights weren't quite as bright as usual... sure enough I check, and one's out but anyway, that's beside the point...

Per my odometer, I went 24.3 miles

BUT

Per my GPS, I went 26.4 miles!

so time for crude math


Consider these constants:

Total miles on odometer trip = 300.2
Amount of gas used = 15.209
Miles on odometer for test = 24.3
Miles on GPS for test = 26.4


SO


24.3 / 26.4 = roughly .92

.92 X's 300.2 = 276.184

276.184 - 300.2 = -24.016

-24.016 X's -1 = 24.016

24.016 + 300.2 = 324.216



SO, 324.216 is the ACTUAL miles I went on 15.902 gallons

which leaves only one calculation left:

324.216 / 15.902 = roughly 21.32




21.32 MPG!



I can honestly say that's a record for my truck, LMAO

and a record that's not too bad considering the motor





but anywho, I just wanted to post another miles per gallon thread of my own, since there's like 12 open already

K dude. You threw me circles with that math, but you came up with what I came up with.

Here's the easy way.......

You had 225/75/15's, now you have 31's. According to this calculator..

http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp (you did this in real time with the GPS)

Thats about an 8% difference. The easiest way to do the math is normal MPG...... 300.2 miles/15.209 g= 19.783mpg. Now since you are actually going 8% farther then the odometer registers, multiply by 1.08 (original mileage, plus 8%)

300.2/15.209*1.08=21.317 rounded up is 21.32!!

My 8% factor is the same as your .92 factor, just minus a bunch of steps.

My head was spinning so fast, I thought I was going to have a seizure!!!!

I was going to be a math teacher way back when, So I am all about simplifying the math. I know I know, a math teacher. The Asian math teacher. How many more stereotypes can we hit? Camera around the neck wandering around aimlessly at half speed? Maybe if I was a tourist.

24.3 / 26.4 = roughly .92

300.2 / .92 = 326.3 miles actually traveled (assuming the gps is right)

326.3 miles / 15.21 gallons = 21.46 MPG

 

Do you get a receipt showing actually how much gas you put in? Thats what I do, I just set my trip meter then see how much gas it takes to fill (on the receipt). Seems to be very accurate.

 

I do that as well. I just figure out the mileage then times by 1.08.

 

I always managed to fine the hard way to get the answer, lol, but hey I passed, cause I always showed all my work even the teachers in HS would

 

sweeettt!!!..i need to get my ACTUAL MPG figures and put em up...my truck on 31's gets better gas mileage going to college than my grandfathers 2004 ford ranger 4cyl 2wd with stock tires...lol

and i do NOT drive it like a granny

when i first got it...it was right at about 22mpgs..(with 235/75's)..when i got my 31" X-terrains mounted (we'll skip the swamper stage...they weren't a good street tire LOL) im getting about 18-19mpgs mixed at about 50-50 highway/city driving...so with the 8% difference..i should be getting close to 21 actually lol

if i was to REALLY try to get some good gas mileage..i guarantee ya i could get upwards of 25mpgs with the 31's!!!

of course i gotta get my Carburetor problems worked out first lol

 

A full tank of gas in my truck last for MONTHS...I'm not sure why you guys are burning so much fuel.

 

Usually 17-19 mixed, but I lost my wallet 220mi from home with ~3/4 tank of gas. I grannied 27mpg out of that tank with about 200lbs of gear in the truck. I had to climb 1000 feet and decent 3000' net.

 

Aren't you running the E3 spark plugs? Do you know your MPG before those?

 

Yeah but with everything he did all at once, it would ignorant to think the only mpg Travis got was from a set of plugs! Don't get me wrong I will probably try them next tune up, but after watching his video of peeling out doing a 180 then racing past his camera, the last thing I thought of was "dang, those e3's are sweeeet!" lol

well, all that I can say is that before my extensive rebuild, I was lucky to get 13-14 mpg out of that old tired motor near the end...

 

ah, I thought he was using regular plugs after the build and then switched to E3. I was wondering what the numbers looked like with each different plug.

 

Bleeder, you should try another tank going heavier on the pedal. Would be interesting to see the difference.

 

lol, maybe later; I've already started the process of trying to get better than the 21 mpg

77 miles, and the needles has just now dropped a hair under the full mark

 

If I go freeway driving I can get 110 miles when the needle hits 3/4. Then it seems to plummet like a rock until 1/4.

 

yeah, now that's it's starting to move, it'll drop pretty fast, lol


I should keep this thread updating as I go through this tank of gas

oh btw, that 77 miles today is from my GPS; my odometer says 70, lol

 

because we actually go the speed limit.

 

I'm getting lik 8 or 9 with 456 gears and 37x12.50's. I'm upgrading to 529s as soon as i have time to put them in.
