Hi all I'm replacing my timing chain and guides for my 1986 toyota 4x4 pickup that has 350xxx miles and was asking on your opinions on reasonably priced sets other than OEM and engnbldr. I've looked at rockauto and they have cloyes and dnj timing sets has any of you encountered any problems with these products? Any of your insite in this matter are greatly appreciated.

Also both cloyes and dnj have steel back guides and also what are your opinions on clevite timing sets?

 

What's wrong with OEM or engnbldr? I've run both of them without problems.

I've also run American made version from Sealed Power/Speed Pro that was well made.

 

I gotta agree my first choice would be Engine Builder the second would be my Toyota dealer.

I get outstanding Customer service from Both.

 

It's not that there's anything wrong with either engnbldr and OEM im just wondering if their are other alternatives.

 

I also wanted to ask a question while I'm in their what else should i replace? How long does an oil pump last in a 22r or the water pump I just want to do preventative maintenance.

 

If your gonna replace the chain go ahead and do the oil pump and water pump too. You gotta take the pumps off to get the cover off anyways. I got the chain, guides, gears, water pump, oil pump, gaskets, and the timing cover for less than $200 from eb and have had ZERO problems. I'd opt for the metal backed guides too.

 

I just did mine on my 87 22r about a month ago. Got parts from egnbldr and worked out great! I never did one before but it worked out GREAT !

 

Well I'm on a tight budget and I can't afford the $155 Ted quoted me for the timing set with oil & water pump as well as the timing cover. If I had the money i would buy it in a heart beat, but kinda hard when you don't have a job . I'll tell you guys how it turned out.

Well after all that i determined the water and oil pump was still good as i replaced them when i did a full rebuild. So i order only the timing chain kit and it arrived today! The kit is made from Evergreen and all the parts look of quality and I'm very pleased with it.

 

So i just replaced the timing chain and this noise happened when i started it up, I rotated the crank twice and timing marks lined up fine, it seems the noise is coming from the harmonic balance area. Also when i press on the clutch the noise goes away, kinda stumped on this one. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've uploaded a video, hopefully you guys can watch it.

How did you hold the crank pulley in place while removing the bolt? If you put a screwdriver or something throuth the slots it's possible you bent the dust sheild behind the harmonic balancer and it's rubbing on something. Certainly sounds like something along those lines.

 

i held the pulley by putting it in 5th gear locking the hubs and torquing it too 130ftlbs sited here http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...ingChain.shtml

 

so i solved the scraping noise somehow it got bent during the whole process but now i noticed coolant leak from behind the timing cover going to the intake cover. has anyone experienced this before? do i have to remove the timing cover off again? and it seems like the gasket didnt seal right. I tightened the bolts firmly but not tightened soo much.

 

Also im still stumped to why the noise goes away when your press on the clutch.. does this sound weird to you guys aswell?
