almost a disaster!!!! and a question

So like most 86 yota's up here in vancouver bc canada, my frame needed a little re-inforcing due to some rust. No big deal, im a commercial transport mechanic, and at work we have a hoist and a nice miller welder. It was cold this morning, and pretty warm in the shop.

Anyways after some cutting and grinding, I was ready to weld the patch in place. First patch , no problem, welded in and looked good. Near the end I started smell gas. Looked around, couldnt see any leaks, So i decided to do a little more, just so i wouldnt have to worry about the frame for a while. So i get another peice of steel ready and just was just about to start welding it in. I happened to glance to the front of the truck and fuel is pouring down the passenger inner fender and off the diff into a big puddle on the floor.

That wouldnt have been a good situation if the truck had caught fire on the hoist with 5 or 6 $100,000 trucks around it.

Anyways, the fuel was comming out of the drain hose of the charcoal canister. I took the gas cap off and there was alot of pressure!!! I had just under 1/2 tank of gas in it. What would cause this?

i was welding on the driver side, so i doubt the fuel tank was getting hot from that.
