air intake swap

ive seen some of you people on here changing your stock air intakes for a (cold air intake) or some have made fine examples of there own. my question is, has anyone seen any gains at all from swapping weather it be power or mileage. i was thinking of making one for my 93 3.0. after getting my headers and exhaust done. thanks for the input.

well its not really a cold air intake and it dont do much for power just better throttle response

You can expect to see a mild power increase with the addition of a cold air intake on a stock rig. An engine is basically an air pump, air gets sucked in and pushed out. Once you unclog the exit with a free flowing exhaust, the true merit of a modified air system will shine. Currently, I have a ram-air induction setup on my 3.0 and it works so well that the stock VAFM is maxed out at around 95-100 mph and the truck basically stalls since there isn't enough fuel being provided for the amount of air being pushed in. I'm going to try my luck again with a 5MGE Supra AFM tomorrow, and see if I can get it dialed in to alleviate the fuel situation at high rates of speed. The exhaust system consists of downey headers, dynomax bullet muffler, and a hooker maxflow muffler all capable of flowing enough for 250 horsepower, more than this 3.0 will ever produce. As for the K&N FIPK don't expect much maybe 3-5 HP at best, that setup is now lying in a box for emissions inspections.

i'm running the ISR mod and a k&n drop in air filter in a stock air box on my 92 3.0. Throttle response is improved. I'd do it again in a hearbeat. check out toyboxfab.com for a pre-fabbed ISR pipe.

if possible i would love to see some pics of the ram air setup. sounds cool. and i have the thorley headers coming from summit and i already got a dynomax high flow converter and the ultra flow muffler here waiting for the headers. all in 2.5 in piping. will be installed in a few weeks when headers arrive. im just looking for the intake system to complement the exhaust .

5MGE dialed in works wonders, much better response than the tiny 3VZE model, provides awesome acceleration. Was able to take the car past the top of the speedometer and the needle mechanism paid the price, upon deacceleration the needle was bouncing around erratically in 10-15 mph increments, making speed measurements impossible. It appears to have calmed down after comming to a complete stop. Set up passed the highway test with flying colors, just need to test on the mountain curves to further refine the fuel.

Call me crazy but that doesnt look like functional ram air system with all those bends?

that is what i was thinking...to get the most out of a ram air wouldn't you want it as straight as possible?

That is true, unfortunately that arrangement is impossible given the tremendous length of the VAFM and air filter used.

I have a similar thing in my 22re. I had to use the bendable slinky tube things to get everything right. The AFM is just a big pain to get placed right.

I shoved my cone filter down by where the ac compressor is, had to run a tube up to where the afm sits (where the battery USED to be) then tubing to the TB.

Works good, I think. Definately better than that stock air box. Engine really feels good at 3-4k rpm.
