I have a cooking thermometer in the vent.

How cold should it read when the AC is on?

I get aroudn 45-50deg in the center vent.

Is that as cold as it gets?

well, i was wondering the same thing. i work in new construction occasionally, and talked to some hvac guys. according to them, the system will cycle on and off at approx 34 and 29 degrees farenheit, respectively.

that sounds pretty cold to me...I dunno though....My dad's old Acura used to do around 50 F but we had problem with the air-conditioning so I don't know if that is an accurate comparison...

I'm pretty sure Air Conditioning when it's working is supposed to blow at about 37-43 F roughlyand thats the temp right as the exit of the vent into the cabin. I read that on another forum when a guy posted similar problems and that is what I recall from the thread.

My Dad and I have one of those fancy temperature reading guns, I'll check it next time I have the truck back together, busted radiator right now. Probably wouldn't be a good idea to crank it with the A/C blowing!

I took my truck in for a rotation of tires. They did an inspection to make sure my truck was summer ready and the report said my A/C was blowing 34F air. cold enough for me.

damn lucky asses, i have no A/C the coldest that the air get out of my A/C is most likely 85 degrees on a 86 degree day!

Yeah my AC blows freezing cold in my truck, but you have to keep your foot on the gas to get it to stay running, idle stop solenoid is out!!

vent temps depend on a few different variables. r-12 (the old stuff) will typically blow very cold, probably about 34-40 at the vent. r-134 typically wont blow as cold as r-12, but i had a truck on r-134 blow at 33 degrees. now the converted systems (r-12 to r-134a) are a crap shoot. some work real well, some dont. on a converted system i would be happy with 50 at the vent at an idle. temps will go down when the vehicle is driven, air blowing into the condenser cools the refridgerent blah blah blah which in turn lowers vent temps. i have a 93 p/u converted to r-134a which blows about 50 at an idle, and gets down to about 40 when it kicks the compressor out. all this is dependant on ambient temps too. hotter outside, higher vent temps.

Thanks - sounds like its "working".... but since it will be at the shop I'll have em inspect it and check the pressures...

It all depends on your ambient temperature. Its supposed to be roughly 40 deg. F lower than the ambient temp. at idle

Ah - so if it blows at 60deg and its 100 out - thats as good as it gets eh?

Our Tractors are all converted to 134 and they will get down to around 38 - 40.... thats without a vacume pulled.. We converted all 4 of them our self and do not have a vacume pump.. I don't see how it it could have helped us any considering the results we got..

i've never heard of the 40 deg below ambient, but theres a whole lot of stuff i dont know. i do think that may actually be pretty close, keep in mind, the key word here is idle. anything above idle will run the compressor faster, (good) and draw air across the condensor (good). if you are blasting down the highway and the best you can do is 60 on any day, i would say there is something wrong.

Last Sat blasting down the highway I got 40deg for about an hour and then it started creeping up.

I get snow out of mine--i dont know if that is because it is snowing outside or i have the windows down when it is snowing. However--that has only happend to me once here in Austin. LOL

Just kidding--but my Uncle said F-16 stationed at Nellis will blow snow when cranked up on hot days.
