where is the best place to put a aftermarket water temp sensor on my 1988 Toyota PU

In the factory location.

On the 22r series engines this is in the middle of the intake. If it doesn't fit the factory position (vertical) due to length you can remove the intake and drill and tap the secondary (horizontal) location.
