Acceleration Problem

I have a 94 Toyota Pickup with the 22re engine. I had the engine completely rebuilt about 2500 miles ago and this problem has been present since the rebuild. It seems when I push the throttle it should have more power. Even if I push the throttle to the floor vs. half way there is no change in the acceleration. Some days I can tell a difference as if it is working like it should but this is rare. I feel a big difference, for the worse, when I turn my AC on. I feel like its a fuel problem. I have replaced the fuel pump because my old one went out. The problem was there before and after I replaced the fuel pump. I replaced the AFM not long before the rebuild. Also when I take off my gas cap to put fuel in, there is always a lot of pressure built up in the tank. Not sure if this is normal. What should I check?

Do you have a check engine light? Have you checked for any stored codes? http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...26diagnosi.pdf This should be your first check

My check engine light is not on. Is the diagnostic testing something I can do at home with simple tools?

1. If it was a fuel problem, you'd get stumble or rough running, not just low power. That said, the fuel filter IS a maintenance item.
2. Pressure is normal. (Greater on warmer days; fill up early in the morning and you'll get more gas for your dollar -- even liquid gasoline expands as it gets warm!) The vent in the cap allows air in (as you drain the tank) but keeps smog-causing fumes in.
3. Check for stored codes always. Check the timing. (A timing light is $20; how much did you pay to have it rebuilt?)

The fuel filter was changed with the rebuild. The rebuild cost around $2000 parts and all. The guy who did the rebuild works on foreign cars only and has an outstanding reputation. Labor warranty of 6 months. He mentioned the hesitation in the throttle before I picked it up and its not engine related. He also helped diagnose the fuel pump issue when it was going out. I do smell strong gas fumes when I get out after a drive. I will run the diagnostics this evening to check for codes.

I just ran the diagnostic test. Paperclip between E1 and TE1. Turned ignition to ON. It blinked constantly, 2 blinks per second. From what I've read that means Normal system operation. No codes are stored. Any other ideas?

Check your engine timing.

Set the engine to TDC. Make sure the rotor points to #1 on the dist. Also pull the valve cover and make sure the timing mark on the cam gear lines up where it should.

My bet is you are 1 tooth out on your timing chain...
