AC Clutch question

Does anyone have any experience with replacing the clutch and coil on these AC compressors?
Mine is on a 1994 4runner 3.0 3VZE
I am wondering if it can be done on the truck without removing the compressor.
Do they press the clutch on or is it held on another way?
Thanks.

I am always fascinated by persons asking "how do I do such and such," without it even occurring to them to look in the MANUAL. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...12compress.pdf It's not like they don't know the manual exists or how to find it; some of these people have been on this site for 5-6 years, so surely they've noticed how often (and easily) the manual is referenced.

In my case https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-r134a-284801/, the compressor was toast so it was all replaced. I removed the clutch and coil for, well, edification (plus I've got a piece of kinetic art on my counter). It's not pressed on. You'll need large (and small) lock-ring pliers. Note that there is a gap spec., that you reach by installing the "correct" shim. I have no idea where you could get that shim (but I'll bet A/C shops have a box of them).

Hey Thanks,... that's Odd I have both genuine factory manuals and could not find the section that shows clutch removal. Mine just shows removing the compressor assembly.

Still wondering if it's possible on the vehicle.

If there's a/c oil on the clutch indicating a front seal leakage, you might as well do the compressor and R134 conversion.

It's going to be difficult doing it on the vehicle, but where there's a will there's a way.

It has a sticker on the front cowl that says it has already been converted.

Why are you replacing the clutch? As bswarm suggested, if you have oil in the clutch it's probably from the front seal, in which case replacing the clutch might not get you anywhere.

But the reason to do it on the truck is obvious enough; you can't remove the compressor without basically rebuilding the AC. So DO take pictures of every tool you use, and how you did it.

It's totally possible.
The hardest part was trying to hold the flashlight, snap-ring pliers, and mirror all at the same time so you can get the snap-ring pliers onto the snap-rings.
That and the screw that grounds the coil to the top of the compressor is a bitch to get at with a screwdriver. I attacked it from the front with a good set of lineman pliers and popped it loose.

The pulley bearing wore out and allowed the pulley to rub through the front face of the coil causing a short.

That's great you got in there. I just did a timing belt and should've gone after a bearing replacement then. Not much need for the A/C in the winter so I just pulled the belt to stop the noise.

I did find this video of bearing replacement on a Camry (same Denso condenser):

I'm not able to get the 10mm bolt to back off though. The A/C works fine so the clutch is engaging. But trying to remove the bolt just spins the pulley - with the A/C on and key in accessory position.

Any tips here?
