A340H Torque Converter - Lock>Unlock>Lock>Unlock

Took a 300 mile round trip last night to pick a small (8') boat up last night. On the way there, the torque converter kept locking and unlocking over and over. Cruising speeds were between 55 - 75mph. Sometimes it would ride locked and then sometimes it would ride unlocked. It was annoying as hell. After about an hour of playing with the damn thing on the road the O/D OFF light started flashing at me so off with the O/D. I was about 10 miles from my destination so I finished the trip out and picked the boat up.

Now for the ride home:

I stopped at WalMart and got some tranny leak/slip juice and put it in. Absolutely no problems on the way home.

WTF?

That flashing OD light means it threw a trouble code, see if you can still pull it. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...31diagnosi.pdf

Mine was doing the same thing after 5 months of jacking whith it in overdrive and out of overdrive then just driving it in drive the damn thing went out. that is the torque converter my suggestion is get the torque converter checked and changed if its bad. I did the lazy thing and sent to a tranny shop and after completley dissassembling tranny w/out authorization and going to pick it up I had to buy a used tranny because half the parts were trashed this was A-+ transmissions in magnolia, TX. get a new torque converter. Mine was a 1991 $runner 3.0 a340h Tranny 4wd.

Well, I have a company car now. So if the tranny takes a dump I will just swap it over to a manual. Or better yet, I will put a 302 in it.

I had the same problem in my 4runner, lost first gear in my auto and once it shifted it was fine. A sensor that plugged into the tranny got dissconnected and was throwin everything off. hope that helps.
