A340F Transmission issues after valve body mod

I am having a problem with my A340F from my 1KZTE Surf (4runner) and cant seem to figure out whats going on. Before the valve body mod below the transmission was running fine.

I have been recently working on getting more power out the engine so i decided to do the valve body mod that i saw on the supra forum.

I ended up shimming out the 1st two actuators with 6mm shims. I also did a fluid swap for semi synthetic Dex 3, the old stuff was full of water from river crossings.

When the engine is cold and i drive the truck it shudders/vibrates (feels like going over a cattle grid slowly) upto 1800rpm where the vibration starts to clear and feels fine by 2100rpm.

When the engine warms up the vibration is not so bad but its still there.

The harder you accelerate upto the 1800rpm the vibration does get worse.

When in park or netural with the hand brake on the vibration will be there through the whole rev range.

I have also added Dr Tranny anti shudder fix with no change.

I tested the stall speed to be around 1800/2000rpm

Anyone got any ideas.

All mounts look good.
Could it be the harmonic balancer?

A shudder would be clutches slipping, more than likely due to a trans fluid pressure drop. I suggest "undoing" what you have done. Go back to your regular trans fluid.

No offense...but dont mess with an auto trans unless you know exactley what you are doing. They will eat themselves alive from the smallest mistake.

Please go check the fluid. Use a white paper towel and wipe the dipstick with it. Snap a pic of the paper towel and post the pic. Smell the dipstick as well.
Lets figure out if you have burned clutches up.

Ive taken a couple of pics, not the best, they where taken in the dark and rain.

Fluid still looks in good condition to me - no unusual smells

I still think it poss could be something to do with torque convertor or fluid.

Reading about the modification i carried out, shimming the valve body and increasing the line pressure has been done by alot of the supra people with no problems. (link to mod below)

I think i might change the fluid back to mineral type, see if anything changes unless any other suggestions.

Fluid looks great.

A bad torque converter will actually feel like the car is missing at highway speeds.

Do you have access to a trans line pressure gauge?

I still think you have caused a low pressure situation somehow and the clutches are chattering.

Ive got something i can use to get a pressure reading with - do you know what thread size the test point is.

Also im thinking when the truck is stopped and in park and i rev the engine the truck vibrates in the same way but through alot of the rev range. make me think i could be engine related or torque convertor if this spins when not in gear.

hmmmm

I dont know the thread size on a toyota...my issues were with
4r75w's in my Mach1 and again in my E350.

My set has several sizes.

There should be a port on the side of the tranny you can take a plug out of and hook the gauge to.

Im assuming all trans mounts are good. Torque converter bolts are tight.

How long/many miles on it since you modified the valve body?

Id like to know what that line pressure is doing when the shudder occurs.

I will test the line pressure at the weekend and get back to you.

All mounts are ok, i checked them when the prob started.

I would say no more than 1000 miles since mod.

I would like to keep the mod installed, the gear changes do feel great so if i can figure out whats going on that would be great.

Thanks again for your help

I called a freind of mine that works for Bauman Electronic Controls,
hes a tranny guru.

With good line pressure...which you def have.

Looks like it is probably the Torque convertor clutches.

I would really like for you to try and "undo" the shimming mod to the valve body before buying swapping in a new TC. Just to eliminate the variable.

Obviously you know you cant really rebuilt a torque convertor at home...has to be cut open and rewelded.

At least you will know one way or another if its the TC or your mod.

I cant imagine this mod would have hurt the TC...as we know increased line pressure provides more clamping force...allowing for a quicker and cooler shift.

Hey thanks for your help, ok ok looks like i will have to take it all apart again.

I will take the shims out and see how it is after.

still dont see how the shims could cause a vibration at a specific rpm.

Anyhow i will give it ago.

Well after buggering about today i sorted out the problem with the shuddering. it turned out to be a buggered harmonic balancer or the front drive pulley. I had looked at alot of forums about it and know one could answer if the front pulley was actually a harmonic balancer or just a pully. well it is a balancer. see pics. The good old truck feels great now. luckly i had a spare, not great but does the job just fine.

thanks for everyones help.

Old one showing perished cracked bonding, this cause shudder between 1800 & 2000 rpm
