95 4runner check engine light / running rough

Hi my 95 4runner 3 liter 6cyl 160,00 miles which has been running great has just recently begun running roughly. I notice it most at stop lights , sounds like its missing. the check engine light came on a few days ago. It went back off and goes on sometimes then back off. its running roughly more and more, then it runs normal, can i check codes on it? if so how, or what should i check? any help would be appreciated, I have little money for taking it anywhere, i love my 4runner dearly, please help,
stillbill

In the engine bay find the "diagnostics" port next to the fuse box. With the ignition off, use a bent paperclip to jump the "TE1" and "E" terminals. Turn the key to "ON" but don't start the engine. The CEL should either flash quickly (no codes) or flash at about 1 second intervals (first digit) then pause for 2 secs, followed by more 1 second flashes. If the CEL is on without blinking, then the terminals arent jumped correctly and need to be adjusted. Count the flashes. Should get a number 11 through 32, possibly 52 or 71 (72?) depending on what's wrong. Post up and Google " '95 4Runner CEL codes" or something similar to get a list of the codes.

HI. Thank you for the info, I will try pulling the codes tomorrow. Also I wanted to add that while my vehicle is running rough when I come to a stop and hit the brakes the idle jumps up and down, when i release the brake the idle goes back to normal.

First try adjusting the ignition timing to spec properly. Secondly, you have air in the coolant lines which gives you the jumping idle. Could be your head gasket(s) are done for. Pull the spark plugs. If one or more are wet, coolant is getting into the engine

If it only happens when the brake is applied, it could be a vacuum leak in the brake booster. More brake pressure, bigger leak, etc.

But yeah, pull those codes. I'd bet one is a code 25 though.
