I need to replace the catalytic converter in my wife’s 4runner (95 3.0 AT 4WD Cal Emissions) and I would like to purchase a bolt in replacement. The previous owner replaced the exhaust after the cat. The problem that I am running into is that the cat is 20.5 inches long and angled 90%. All of the direct-fit replacement cats I’ve found are 17.5 inches with no angle.
Has anyone else run into this problem before?

the 95's have a completely different setup for their cats. and noone besides the dealer sells bolt-on replacements for it. best you can do is get a universal one and fab up pipiing and flanges to it to be able to bolt it on to your rig. if your cat is really shot you can try cutting off the piping with the flanges off the old cat and weld them onto the new cat thats if the piping is long enough

Thanks for the input. For my wife’s 4runner I will do exactly what you said, cut the pipe and flange off of her old cat and weld it to the new cat.

Do you know if the pipe from the exhaust manifold and cat are the same (94 vs 95)? If so, then the difference should be between the cat and muffler being that the 95 cat is 3” longer than the 94.

I also need to put an exhaust on my 85 trail rig that I swapped in a 93 22re. I want to step up to a 2 inch exhaust system but keep it fairly quiet. I have several extra pipes that go between the exhaust manifold and cat both for 22r’s and 3.0’s. I am going to cut the end off of the 22r pipe where it bolts to the manifold and weld it to the 3.0 pipe to give me a 2 inch pipe from the exhaust manifold down. Then I want to bolt on a Magna Flow 3.0 “direct fit” cat and bolt that do a bosel “direct fit” muffler and tail pipe.

the pipe you're referring to is not the same between the 94 & 95. IIRC 95 was the only year that has 4runners with cali emissions (had 2 o2 sensors basically). you would think that Toyota would have just changed the muffler portion of the Exhaust but instead they changed everything after the exhaust manifold. Depending on what cat you use, you might have to add a piece of piping to get the flanges to connect.

as for your other questions, I'm clueless when it comes to the first gens. Maybe someone else can chime in.

 

if you do not have emissions laws dont put one back on, i have a 89 with a v6 and cut it off and it sounds great and improved my gas mileage by 3 mpg

Thanks for the help on the pipes. When I go to replace her cat, I'll just get a 94 cat and weld on the longer pipe that is on her cat now.

As for my 85 PU, I just need to get the parts are start fabing.
