95 4 runner looses power

The truck has 162 k miles and the engine was rebuilt about 4 k back. It ran pretty well for a while and was getting around 16-17 mpg highway. Mileage dropped off and it would cough a few times at low rpms going though the gears. Finally got to where it had lost power to where it would barely pull my trailer and quads.

I checked timing and it was around 17 degrees BTDC. Reset it to 10 according to manual. It runs great for about 4 miles then the power drops off again. While we were doing the timing it was showing code 14, no signal from coil. I'm thinking the coil is going bad and is not communicating with the ECM when it gets hot. Any help greatly appreciated.

if your 14 is my 14, it is no igf signal. generated by ignitor, recieved by ecu. it means your ecu is not recieving a confirmation of ignition. verify that ignition does occur. if not, plugs, cap, rotor, and wires. still no? coil.

if you are getting good, on time ignition, (i verify this by hooking my timing light up to my coil wire, and letting the light strobe on my hood for a while. any inconsistancy=bad ignition.) your wiring harness is shorting somewhere between the ignitor and the ecu.

New plug wires were put on this weekend. Everything else but but coil when it was rebuilt.

Did you use NGK wires? The Duralast don't work with these engines.

Duralast were what I could get. What problem did you have with them?

I put in a coil today and it was doing the same thing. I monkeyed with the timing a little without putting the timing light on it and it seems to be doing better. I drove it around town about 7 miles and it held power. I took it out after the Cotton Bowl was in the third quarter and K-State was blowing the game and ran it about 25 miles. It's still holding on ok. I could run in 4th gear at 2000 rpm with out it bogging down, including uphill on the overpasses.
