94 Pickup Won't Hold Position on Hills?

What does it mean when a 22-RE 4x4 begins to creep (more jerk) forward a few inches at a time when parked on a hill? It does it more so when the parking brake is not fully applied, but creeps-pauses forward even when I have the e-brake pulled all the way back. Hopefully not a sign of a loss of engine compression... H.

Is it a auto or manual? look under the truck and see how slack the e-brake cable is, could need adjustment, they stretch over time

Good question. It's a manual trans (with new master and slave cylinders).

Does it "creep" forward a few inches and then stop? Or does it just keep going?

It is in gear right?

Also, adjust your e-brake. Drive your truck in reverse, get up to about 10mph then pull the e-brake till you are stopped. Don't be scared of it..do that 10 or so times, it should adjust your rear brakes for you.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. The truck is definitely in gear-- and it creeps forward a few inches, pauses, then creeps forward a few inches. Each time it feels like the truck is about to break loose and roll free but it stops after a few inches every time. I get the feeling that the engine is rotationg or turning over during the creep, which is why I ask if this a sign of a loss of comrpession. Not sign otherwise of any other problems. Not overheating, no loss of coolant, oil clear. H.

Well, it doesnt sound too bad. I have known a few people with trucks that did that. I bet you are only noticing it because your e-brake cannot hold the truck in place.

I would do a compression test, if you wanted to make sure everything is good under the hood.

Damn Jay you beat me to it....man I type slow.

It doesent stop? Will it keep on creeping on.

I hate parking on hills for that reason, sometimes my truck will creep one or two of those jerks you speak of, but will stop after that. My e-brake also sucks and freezes up in the winter so I never use it below zero.
Apprently the e-brake cable is self adjusting, I know you need to be going backwards but I dont know if you supposed to use your brakes or e-brake (I use both to be sure) to stop yourself. And repeat untill you get sick of doing it. I notice a slight improvement after that, maybe one or two clicks from full bore.

simple answer is that the parking brake cant hold the truck by itself, and when you put it in gear the engine compression and internal friction holds it back until the compression in the cylinder that is in its power stroke bleeds off past the rings then the engine will turn over about 90 degrees until the next cylinder builds compression and bleeds off. The rings and cylinder wall in any engine do not make a perfect seal so over time with load on the crank this process will happen.

Bottom line, your engine is fine

its either the parking brake, the clutch, or both. its one of the two. in my old chevy, when the clutch was going out, it would creep forward. same with my moms old isuzu trooper. check BOTH things just to be on the safe side

well, we got the simple explaination... so here's the simple problem-solver answer...

don't park on steep hills

mine does the same thing, just don't let it roll back while the truck's in a forward gear, or vise-versa (don't let it roll forward in reverse) - that'll made the engine rotate backwards... usually not too good for the motor...

if it's 4wd, put it in 4low... helps out a lot to stop it

x2 on the 4low parking. I do that ALL the time when im on steep hills with no curb to rest my tire on. Downhill = 4low and reverse, uphill = 4low and 1st

Clutch springs.
This happened to me in a Ford ranger.
You said it's a new clutch. So,maybe it's not the clutch springs,but.....that's what my past problem was.
2cents....

Ha, thats cause the BC boys are used to plenty of hills! haha.
When I was young and foolish I thought that just because my truck was old, I shouldn't expect the e-brake to function properly. When I took my truck in and asked about it, Toyota fixed it for me and my woes were solved

E-brake is all it is. Even with a Marlin 1200lb clutch (a year old), my 4rnr will do that on particularly steep hills. Well, used to that until I tightened the parking brake. Make sure the levers are working fully and not sticking at all. Mine were rusted up pretty good and took plenty of PB blaster and cleaning to get them working again. Also, on the rear axle, there's a little, swinging arm where the parking brake cable splits. I forget what it's called at the moment. That was frozen up pretty bad, too. Check it. I had to completely pul mine apart and clean and lube it before it would allow the cable to pull and return evenly.

Edit: It's called the "regulator".

Well, look at your avatar. That steep at most, but not much less. I had a strong motivation to get my PB working again, anyway. Sometimes I have to park on the hill going into my property to open the gate and prefer to leave the engine running. Which, of course, means leaving the truck in neutral. Now, my PB holds the truck rather well unless I have the trailer or a lot of weight in the cargo bay. Could be better under some circumstances (very steep situations), but it's been a while since the last adjustment. Tell you what, though.....new shoes and turned drums make a tremendous difference in that regard!! I just have to readjust the cable, again. Hell, I may need a new one here after while.

its your motor turning over because of gravity. not a problem, if it wants to do that park in in low range
