94 pickup CV axle shaft replacement

Need to replace the passenger side CV axle on my 94 4x4 pickup. Wondering if anyone has any good tips or youtube videos that would help the process along. Thanks

Red face

You may as well do both and get it done

Every one seems to have their own style of doing things .

Read the sticky - 93 Factory Service Manual. All how-to in there.

The most important thing to remember (it's not mentioned in the FSM) is that you must compress the suspension as though the truck were sitting on the tires. If you leave the wheels dangling (the obvious way), the angle is wrong and the half-shaft will NOT come out. I put a small jack under the rotor and lift until the weight starts to come off the jack stand. Then the half-shaft will come out easy as pie.

Scope- interesting..I did them on my 94 a few months ago with the suspension unloaded and it worked..

OP might as well buy bearings too and get it all done at once. 54mm socket comes in handy too

Dropzone -

I can't explain that. I do know that I must compress the suspension on my '94. There are a number of posts here where frustrated owners are taking a sledge hammer to the differential flange to knock out the studs just to remove the half-shaft. In every case I can get a response, they had the wheels dangling.

Just goes to show: get the best advice you can, but always keep your eyes open.

Here's how I did it.

-Loosen the six nuts on the cv axle while the truck is still on the ground. If the axle has snapped you'll have a real fun time getting those nuts loose without an impact like in my case haha
-Lift front end.
-Remove c clip on the outter cv axle.
-Unbolt lower ball joint. 4 bolts holding it in. You don't have to press it out. Just need to give yourself enough clearance and wiggle room to pull out the axle.
-With a jack raise the lower control arm and with enough fiddling around you should be able to slip out the old axle and get a new one in.

You shouldn't need to do that. Worse case (in my experience - see dropzone) you might have to remove the one bolt holding the stabilizer bar.

But at least your method didn't involve the all-too-common swearing. :^)

It gave me the clearance I needed to get it in. Maybe thats why there wasnt so much swearing haha also forgot to mention that I unbolted the strut from tee lower control arm.

My '94 DLX 22RE pickup needs the front passenger axle replaced. The one that's in there now (presumably the original) has a torn boot, and it clicks pretty bad when turning with both the transfer case put in 4wd and the hubs locked (doesn't make any sound locking the hubs alone and turning). I never need 4wd anyway since I don't do anything offroad beyond getting my dirtbike to/from the MX track, and we only average maybe 1/2 a day of snow each year, but since the axles are only like $40~$55 new from RockAuto/ebay, I'll get around to swapping it out eventually.
