Recently picked up a 93 22re 2wd 5spd. Been working on it and finally drove it around some. I'm guessing being a 2wd it's a w55. Shifter feels a little sloppy. It will shift to through all the gears fine. Shift into gear or reverse while stopped on the clutch but refuses to down shift while moving. Double clutching doesn't help. You can slide it back into the current gear but not down any. I have new bushings coming tomorrow but I'm not sure they're gonna do any good. I popped out the shifter and the current ones don't look too worn. The ball is pretty badly pitted though and someone mangled up the retainer cap pretty good. It's currently filled with just 75 90w gear oil. I've never come across this problem before. As soon as you come to a stop it will slide into gear. While moving if pushing into gear I don't feel a grinding. Just won't go until you come to a stop. Have a chance to pick up an 88 2wd trans local. Should also be a w55? Anyone have a shifter lever they want to sell? W56 the same?
Sounds like you probably have worn synchronizers. Upshifting is pretty easy on the syncros, since they are trying to slow down the input shaft, which it naturally is doing anyway while you're between gears. For the downshift, the syncro has to provide enough friction to significantly increase the speed of the input shaft, which is harder to do. The fact that you can't make the shift while double clutching probably just means you aren't blipping the throttle hard enough between gears. If you are truly matching rpm's, the balk ring should get out of the way and allow you to complete the shift.
The first thing I would try is to drain the transmission fluid and replace it with Redline GL-4. Most auto parts stores sell only GL-5 gear oil, and while it's not harmful to the tranny, it is slicker than GL-4 (because it's formulated to work in hypoid gear differentials), and doesn't allow the syncros to grip as well. High mileage trannys like ours need all the help they can get.
I pulled the trans out tonight after realizing how trashed the wallowed out the shifter seat ring was. Also found a piece of metal hanging out in there. The shifter retainer collar is also so trashed if you tighten down the 4 bolts on it you can't even move the shifter. Picking up a used w55 saturday
