I have to pull my starter today when I get home from work. Any special tools I need or any tricks? I have a 93 2wd pickup extra cab 5 speed 22re.

I have a 4X4 but the way I do it might work on yours. Take the plastic intake pipe off the throttle body. Take the oil filter off. Get a long extention (I use 2 long and short together) with a 14mm socket and feed it through from the front by the battery, under the intake, along beside the engine mount to the bolts. Then take them off. I have found this to be the easiest way as it will take you a long time using a wrench and 1/4 turns. Make sure you disconnect the battery cable as your socket could short on the starter terminals. I use my pnuematic ratchet and have it off in 15 min.
Anyone else have a better way??

sorry but heres how i did mine... first diconect the negative battry cable jack the truck up take the passenger side wheel off then pull the splash guard off then take the 10mm bolts off the access panel then crawl underneth and take the 12mm bolt off the starter cable then if you have a little mirror take off the 14mm bolt of the back of the starter as it is hard to see or you can look from the top and line up the socket then take the bolt off the bottom of the starter wich also is a 14mm make sure you atlest have a 6'' and 10'' socket exteisons it took me around a hour to change mine

Elton has it down pat. I did one on my wife's xcab and it was no problem at all. All you need to do is get it jacked up high and SAFE and get in there and do it.
While you are at it, do the fuel filter. It is one huge PITA to replace under normal starter in place circumstances, but with the starter off and everything else ready, it is very easy to do.
Many people will say they are supposed to be a lifetime filter, but personally I think it is BS. I've started changing mine basically once a year or around 10-15k depending on if I have been driving it much and paying attention and every time I have changed it I have noticed some change in performance.
Just an opinion.
p.s. search for threads on starter contacts. There is a pretty good chance all you need to do is replace them.
