I have a 1993 toyota with a 22re. It does not have power steering or ac. Here's the deal:
Recently a grinding noise started in the motor. I changed my oil the other day and now it's even louder. I read somewhere that it might have been the starter grinding on the flywheel, so I replaced the starter. The noise is still there and I'm not sure what to do now. Any suggestions?

 

Does it make that sound when your idling in park or just when you drive.

 

It makes the sound the entire time the engine is running

 

Do think it could be your timing chain rattling? Mi e did that and it sounded like a grinding noise to me. It was broken chain guides allowing the chain to hit the cover.

 

I replaced the timing chain a little over a year ago, could the guides be broken that quickly?

 

Possibly if there plastic. I'm going to replace mine soon and I ordered the metal driver side one. But unless you put a lot of miles on it and ride hard it may not be that.

I had to trouble shoot a similar problem as yours but it was the transmission on mine. What I did was unbolt the starter and held it in place while someone else cranked the motor. Once it was started, I could pull the starter out of place to see where the noise was coming from.

It is a tight fit and takes some strength to hold it into place while starting but it would let you know if it is your starter or something else. Make sure your battery cable is insulated well and watch where you move it to when pulling it away from motor.

 

Just getting around to replying. A few days after posting this the brake and battery lights came on indicating an alternator issue. I ripped the alternator out and figured out that was the source of the sound. Once I got it out, I turned the pulley and it made an awful clunking sound. Took it in to the place I bought it from (still under warranty) and they rebuilt it. Apparently one of the diodes was going out in it as well so they fixed that too. Re-installed and it sounds better than it ever did. Thanks for the help
