fixed the photobucket thing......CTRL and + at the same time and it fixed it......I searched it...of all things....a search.....hahahahhhaha

YUP. that's my mess.

broken timing guide equals eventual timing chain wearing through the wall of the cover equals that little mess right there.

that's why it's important to differentiate between the knee-jerk headgasket blame (like i originally did blame it on the headgasket) and the big picture of finding the real problem of the timing chain guide failure. like i did.

why did it fail...probably because they do sometimes...

 

not sure how common, but of course i've read about it alot here. statistically i have no clue if it's an absolute given that it will happen....but i don't want it to happen again. that's for sure.

money is hard to come by and i started with NO SKILL as a newbie to all this. But at this point, i would look forward to doing it again.....just not on MY TRUCK...better not...EVER!

 

Well as your doing the work, you would have seen the damage I dont have schematics on the 22RE's tho.

Thats nuts tho. I have to look at the engine schematics to see.

if by "schematics" you mean like studying the FSM / Haynes / Chiltons and tons of threads and pics and so on and so forth......I've done and am still doing all that.......and plus when I get stuck I ask these guys.....ALOT!

I realize it can be painful to flip through this thread and try to extract pertinent stuff and I apologize ALOT for that and I promise I will do a proper thread when this thing is all over......hahahahahha. no, seriously I will....if it ever ends.

backside of the timing cover when i got it off.....looking at the driver's side, arrow area is where the chain finally broke through the wall of the water pump area causing the leak....small as it looks I assume it would expand with heat and continued friction.

Well if you were from Washington. I would help you. I've rebuilt many engines, just not 22RE's But with the right documentation. Its not too bad. Just take it one step at a time. Cleaning that is going to be mad crazy sucky. I would personally just mix it out. Fix the problem, and run a few quarts of oil through it. Iron blocks are going to be a bitch to just clean out normally without wire brushing it out.

JEez.... :-( I feel your pain.

 

actually...i'm at the part where i am buttoning this thing all up...new timing cover and head is on......just need some belts and odds and ends and i'll be mostly good to go.

it's been a tremendous leaning experience for me.
