From: Bryan Tx,
I hope you don't mind, I posted this in my thread & thought I would copy & paste it here since your thread gets more traffic & we are in the same boat.

"At this point it is a little late for me to be bringing this up, but there is one thing about this job that keeps popping up in my mind. I have 186K on my engine, it's out of the truck, the head is off, the oil pan is off, the cylinder walls look great. My thing is that I kinda feel bad for not replacing the rod & main bearings, honing the cylinders & re-ringing the pistons. I don't think that this stuff NEEDS to be done and it's not in the budget anyways but I keep thinking that I am going to regret not doing it later. I'm sure the bottom end will last me for quite a while since I don't plan to daily drive the rig. Just wanted to see if I could get some feed back to how others who have gone this far and left the short block alone felt about it when they where done."

so here's what I got done today....painted all that stuff, brought the head up from the basement and had it on a makeshift workbench there and I cleaned it 1 more time.

bolted the tubes on that attach on the back of the head, so it's essentially ready to be placed back on.

have to go slow now....was looking at my bags of bolts and stuff...and honestly I have no clue what I was talking about with some of them....so I'm gonna just walk away for a day or 2 so I don't get totally frustrated.

otherwise I will regroup and just start working in the reverse order of disassembly with the timing cover install being that 1st real step.

I am going thru the same thing right now, can't decide which bolt goes where. I thought I did a good job a labeling everything but apparently not. Just a little bit of trial & error, I'm not goinig to let it get me down.

YUP....like I said, I am just going to start working reverse of what I did.....FSM wants me to assemble the head / lower intake, exhaust manifold etc before I put the head back on to make it like 200lbs to lift up....not gonna happen....lower intake is trapped in the engine bay anyway by all the wires...EFI portion sits in the back of the truck and exhaust manifold will be placed back on once the head is in, just like when I took it out.......when I took the head out, the only thing it was wearing was the 2 tubes on the back, which i just put back on yesterday.

thanks. *sips coffee with a splash of milk in it*

problem is I know so much more now than I did when I started that the labeling is not the best. parts formerly known as "thing" or "right near the ______" or "just in front of the ______ under the _______" I now know the exact names of .....so this may get interesting....that's why I need to go slow(er).

But I want this friggin thing up and running ......grrrrr!
