'92 sr5 pickup. All stock. Where to start?

Hey guys! Brand new to yotatech but am very excited to join. ! just purchased my first vehicle ever! It's a super clean '92 sr5 with 188,000 miles, everything I believe is stock. Its a manual with the 3.0 v6 and drives great Super excited about this truck and can't wait for a long life with it, I plan on building it up over time and taking it offroad and having fun with it but will also be my daily driver. Any advice on where to start this rig on a limited budget would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Yotatech

I'd suggest searching and reading build threads.

Learn what you can and can't do with it. These trucks are very capable in stock form. If your budget is limited, build an emergency fund for the times you do break something. When it breaks, replace it with new/stronger/upgraded components.

Great advice thank you. I will do that. I will continue to study all the great builds on Yotatech and will update what I do in the future on it thanks!

Where to start? Go drive the thing. Find a nice trail, drop it into low range, and let the good times roll. Upgrade where you see necessary.

Congrats on the first yota. Aha got my first in Oct 2011. Such a great day. Just bought another today.

First thing i did was stick some beefy tires on it... but if your wanting power and gas mileage i don't recommend:p but mines a 22re v6 might do a little better

I had a black 90 SR5 pickup with all the options
The only mods that were done was the original owner put on a 3" body lift and 33x12.5 BFG tires on 15x8" Outlaw II rims, manual Warn front hubs, and side nerf bars. It came with 4.56 gears and the v6/5spd handled the 33s really well.

Loved that truck till I got rear ended in a yield lane. It's in Toyota heaven now

Seriously, Those are the only mods I would do on a nice stock rig for daily driving

i would start with maintenance stuff. previous owners seem to neglect things like gear oil, timing belts, brakes, tires, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. gosh darn previous owners.

get it all cherry so that when your ready to stuff some big tires all locked together (i hear a reputable "lunchbox" locker is the most cost effective off-road option aside from tires) your truck doesnt mind turning them.

my 92 dlx 4cyl was my favorite truck. ever. new enough to be comfortable, old enough to be rock solid, simple enough for me to work on. bought it bone stock. sold it with 31's, and a stereo. all it ever really needed and i wheeled the crap out of it. congrats

Sooooo I actually picked up my truck today, I went on a good test drive a couple days ago. Everything sounded fine during the test then today filled her up (with 85) and took it onto the highway and it developed a tick sound under the hood audible in the cab. After about 15 miles of around town driving the engine light came on. The oil pressure is low but the level is good and just had a oil change a couple hundred miles ago and oil is still clear. Any suggestions? Ahhhhh I just got this truck hours ago! Could that have been the low octane gas? Should I take it to a mechanic? It has the 3.0efi v6 in it

Low oil pressure is not a good thing, ask the PO if he has ever had any issues with that.
Seafoam the truck, follow the instructions on the can. 1/4 can in the oil, and then I suck the rest down the vacume line off the Master cly in to the engine. Then I put a full can in the tank. Sea foam works great.
You also want to clean the TB out, most people never do it.
Good luck

Try checking your timing. Maybe the PO ran premium and adjusted the timing to run off of that.

get the code from that check engine light. everybody's giving good tips but may be errelevant to the current problem. if you dont know how to check codes, search it or just buy a book (haynes, chilton, toyota, etc) a fsm coupled with yotatech can solve ANY problem

So the check engine light was nothing. The EGR valve main electrical wire had worked itself unplugged. I plugged it back in and reset the system. No more check engine light The engine tick is just noisy injectors, totally normal. Thank you for the suggestions but everything's good.
