92 pickup timing issue

finished doing a head gasket job on 92 pickup. put it all back together fire it up and go to set the timing with the light rotate the distributor to as far as it goes and it wont go past 15 degrees before tdc and it idles around 1000. thought maybe i was a tooth out... rotated the distributor one tooth and i can get it to 10 degrees even 0 but the truck runs like crap.what can i be missing.

I'm guessing you have a 22re engine? I personally would pull out the the #1 plug and get it to TDC on the compression stroke then check your your timming marks. I'm guessing your off just a bit. Changing your location for the distributor will not make up for this. If your valves and pistons are not synched correctly it will never run correctly. Also if you run it too far out you have the possibility of the valves being bent by the pistons. This normally happens when the timming belt breaks while running ( at least that's what happened to me on my 89 Pickup). Hopefully the only reason you did a head gaket job was for a leak?
