92 Pickup Fuel Filter

I didn't see any old threads concerning this questions specifically, so here goes... I've bought a new fuel filter for my truck (92 3.0l). I tried to get the old filter off with a 13mm line wrench for the line nuts, but it started stripping the nut. Anyone done this before that had to get inventive on it? I don't think I can get a pair of vise grips on the wrench. Thanks.

Well your quote sure works here..."If it aint broke, fix it 'till it is!"

I purchased some angled c-shaped box wrenches at a specialty shop for about $12. This type of wrench grips the nut a lot better. The problem is finding a place that sells them.

Thoes wrenches are a good idea as well as using a wrench that is as thick as posable so you have more surface contact. Spary it with liquid wrench several times today and try again tomorow.

Man. I can't tell you fellas what a PITA changing this filter is. Mine was welded on there by years of rust. The last guy overtightened one end, forcing the flare into the fitting on one side. OR is one side fixed???? The other side wasn't ruined, but needed to be re-flared to straighted out. All the while I was loosing gasoline.

Just mention this as a possible scenario for you. By the way, aren't the ends 14mm? and the ends on the filter 19mm? I was able to get plain wrenches on the side closer to the gas tank. On the other side I held the line fitting with a crows foot and a 6" extention/ratchet combo. Then I simply used the 19mm wrench to undo the filter from the opposite end of the filter.

Maybe it was 14mm. The wrench I bought is 13 on one side & 14 on the other, so either way I'm covered. Anyway, I'll give it a shot of liquid wrench tonight & see what damage I can do tomorrow. Thanks guys!

I had a very hard time getting mine off too. I was about ready to cut it off and relocate the thing when my neighbor managed to get it loose. We were using line wrenches. If you round off the nuts too much you might try filing down the nut sides until you can get the next smaller size wrench on there.

Did you take of the transmission support crossmember? I tried it without taking it off and its a hell of a lot easier with it off, its not too bad either, just the 4 bolts to the frame, i think there are 4 in the bottom of the t-case and two into the tranny housing? BUT JUST REMEMBER, support the tranny with a jack stand!

Then you would really have flamed your truck huh. Well I didn't say I had worked out all the details of the relocation but you would definitely want to use "hand tools only" LOL . Maybe a small knife edge file or a hack saw blade to cut the line. Then maybeand that's a big bold "maybe" you could find some fuel line hose and hose clamps that would fit the OD of the remaining fuel line and run it to an aftermarket in-line fuel filter. Lucky for me I didn't have to deal with doing it, but if you do figure it out and do it, let us know how you did it.
