92 pickup; engine knock
#1
So, I've been browsing the craigslist lately, on a mission to find a toyota 4x4 to carry me through a Minnesota winter. I found a 1992 Pickup with the 22re engine for $1000. The post says it needs a rear leaf spring, eventually a new windscreen, and possibly the motor. I was hoping to find some concrete knowledge on this and if it is a good deal or not.
The poster said in an email that not long after a head gasket replacement it shut off while driving and then knocked after he tried to restart it. Here is the link to the original posting: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/cs...548723567.html.
Any info that someone has would be greatly appreciated! I'm pretty handy and have most of the tools around to do most any engine job. I just don't have any experience with knocking motors or toyota's for that matter! Thanks in advance!

When head gasket blows and water gets in pan, it's usually only a matter of time before bearings go. If he would let you, you could pull the pan and have a look at the crank to see if the journals are grooved or scored. If not, you could possibly replace the bearings and get you through the rest of winter, but no matter what, an engine rebuild would be inevitable. Also, with the rust and broken suspension, it wouldn't seem like this truck had had a very good life.
On the flip side, the truck is worth more than 1000 in parts alone, so if you could bandaid it back together an get yourself through winter, you could sell the parts and get all your money back.

Check the frame especially by the leaf springs and below the fuel cap. Being a truck from up north, I would really be concerned with the frame being rotted.

That wouldn't pass the registeration inspection in denver, broken windshield and cab rotted in a support area. We don't have a stringent safety test like alot of places but they refuse to tag for windshields.
