92 4runner 22re auto transmission

Daughter may need new tranny in her 4runner soon. Are V6 and 22re automatics the same? I have heard some jeeps run the same aisin transmission, if so what years/models? What is the latest Toyota year that will direct swap in? Thanks for your imput. (340,000km on it and goin strong)

The 3VZE and 22RE automatics are different. Best option is to find out which transmission you have and replace like-for-like since there may be variations in electronics, etc. There should a placard on the driver's door frame showing the transmission code.

There should be a transmission code on the firewall or door jamb. Either A340H or A340F. Find a replacement transmission from a truck with the same code. I'm not 100% sure, but I think if the transfer case shifter is a pistol-grip type like the transmission selector, then it's the A340H, if the transfer case shifter is like a mini manual shift lever, it's an A340F. A lot of folks will say the V6 came with the A340H and the 22RE came with the A340F. That may be the case most of the time, but not always. My 1986 pickup has the 22RE and A340H, and came that way from the factory.

Um a V6 had a A340f behind it. Just an a 340f from a first gen 4runner. You can compare a jeep 340 if you know what years they had them I think it was the late 80s to early 90s but i would go over everything to make sure it was exactly the same before you buy it. If you look over on the Jeep forums I think you should be able to find out when they where in jeeps.

And then you have to worry about bell and tail housings as well as transfer cases, etc., no?

According to this: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/ The V6's came with an A340H. There is a lot of conflicting info on which autos were used with which engines. I suspect they both can be found behind 4cyl and 6cyl engines of various years. Best bet is to go by transmission code on the firewall or door jamb. There's a lot of good info here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=587521 that seems correct for the most part. One of the posters has some info on using a Jeep AW4 and transfer case options with that transmission.

This is why you are a newbie AND SHOULD NOT BE POSTING ON STUFF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The A340f came behing both the 3.4 V6(3rd gen 4runner) and the 22re. The 340h is found behind the 3.0. Like I said you should just stick with an auto from behind the 22re. You will speedo issues from behind a 340f from a 3.4. Plus the solenoid harness connector probably wont be the same and will probably give you some grief. I can remember if the tcase from the 22re auto is 21 or 23 spline. I know the turbo was a 23 but I think you trans has a 21. So then you have to modify you tcase to put it back on not to mention you will probably need an adapter as well. Also you have to swap your bell housing from your trans to an A340f that was behind a v6 that was mentioned in a previous post but that is easy.

Unless you want to tinker with it then go ahead and get any A340f. But like I said for simplicity just stick to the 22re A340

The ones from the Jeep XJ won't work.
They won't bolt up to the bell housing.
The valve body (and thus ECU controls) are different.

The 22RE also comes with a A340H transmission. All the 3.0 V6 autos seem to have A340H transmissions too. 22RE with A340F hard to find but i have seen a few.

I'm pretty sure my 22RE has an 340H behind it. But I think the V6 version has extra friction plates in it to handle the larger engine (????).
