91 4runner engine knock

Hey guys, so i just purchased a 1991 4runner for 600 dollars because the engine had a knock and the previous owner did not have the time to mess with it so i am now the lucky guy who gets to do it.. I have never torn apart an engine so i am a little skeptical until i know what i am dealing with..

it appears to be two different knocks. The engine will knock when i start it up and after about 5 seconds it will stop but it knocks in sink with rpms.. when i give throttle it speeds up and slows down. but at idle it rarely knocks. any ideas would be very helpful, if not i may just start tearin and see what i can find!

without hearing an audio/video clip, I am gonna say either timing chain or rod knock, or both. Maybe piston slap but doubt that. Also 22re or 3vze? Because it does matter since the 3vze doesn't have a timing chain.

hmmm a little odd for a rod knock kinda sounds more like a wrist pin, but try this, pull the plug wires one at a time start it and see if noise goes away. If it does then your noise is definitely in the bottom and and time to tear it apart, if noise does not go away, it doesn't mean it's not in the bottom end though.

You might want to also run a compression check.

The guy i bought it from said the knock started after he ran the truck too low on oil, which makes sense.. if that helps at all

if that were the case, I am almost certain that that noise is gonna be bottom end. What, you won't know till you tear it apart or at least take the oil pan off and give the rods a wiggle. Don't pull that till you do the spark plug/wire test. If noise doesn't go away with simply removing the plug wires, also try plugs one at a time as well which will keep cyl pressure down.

I have no idea. But worst case is a engine swap most likely would be cheaper and easier if you don't mind getting a used engine. If you do decide to look for a engine check craigslist. People are always selling cheap toyota engines fully dressed for cheap. GOOD LUCK. (I hope it is a quick easy fix though)

x2 on the engine swap, I don't know what your experience is, but a 3.4 swap should be rather simple in one of those gens. Of course I don't have a bunch of engine swap experience so I could be wrong on the ease of it.

so i checked the wires and it still didnt stop so i will check compression and thew plugs although im pretty sure the guy said the compression was good. i may just take the heads off and take a peak and then look through the bottom if i can spot anything under the pan. I have done the 3.4 swap on my 91 pickup and i may do that on this one too, or buy a used 3.0. the only reason i dont want to do either of those, especially the swap, is i bought this rig just to sell it for profit. Not too many guys like buying swapped rigs just because they didnt see it done themselves to see if you did it legit. but i may just have to buy a 3.0 off CL.. Ill let you guys know when i have checked everything out and see what you think

ok, so here is an update.. i have all of the valves exposed and my oil pan out of the way, i havent taken my heads off yet but so far i havent seen anything that really rattles or anything broken. what i did find is a bunch of metal shavings in my oil pan and something you will never believe, i found a hose clamp rattling around in my air intake manifold haha.. i doubt the clamp would make all of that noise though, especially after seeing the metal in the pan im sure i will find something jacked up here soon. i am probably going to take the heads off tomorrow to take a look.. here are some pics of the stuff i found inside..
