91 2wd lift

Newbie question : looking for a mild lift kit for a 91 2wd. Don't plan to hit any crazy trails but I'm hitting the back roads for fishing and need a little more ground clearance. I plan to change the wheels/tires out as well to something more suiting to the aesthetic. I'm looking for a fairly comfortable ride and zero fitment problems.

Any pics of lifted 2wd's? Any experience with the products on the market?

I was thinking of just calling Downey off road since I've heard their name around the toyota community year in and year out (and I'm in so cal).

Help is much appreciated.

Thanks

im in the same boat as you. i have a 94 2wd im planing on lifting like 2-2.5'' and will be putting bigger tires on. for the front i am doing 1.5'' balljoint spacers and a little cranking on the torsions. for the rear i plan on a lift shackle. tires im going to run a 29'' tall tire which is like 4'' taller then the stock 195/75/14.

edit: forgot to add that i can get you a set of balljoint spacers for 100+shipping. see this thread for pics

Back in High School I had a "91 Extra cab auto that I lifted 3" with a Body Lift. I ran 30.5x10.5 15's. She looked good and handled good, no rubbing issue's at all. Now I've learned a little bit and there are better options.

1.) 1.5" Ball Joint Spacers for 2wd Yota's 4crawler is the place to go!
2.) A slight crank of the Torsion Bars to add that last bit.
3.) get new shocks, not for ride height but to help smooth out the ride
4.) Either blocks or shackles for the rear. I've never seen shackles used on a 2wd but I don't see why not. Other option would be new leafs.

Mark,

That truck is way to nice to take offroad. I would love to find one like that to make into a corner carver.

When I had my 90 2wd I had the torsions cranked and the rear springs re-arched and was able to run 30x9.5x15's on 7 inch wheels. Ball joint spacers would be the hot setup for the front.

Post some pics when you are done.

thanks but that pics about a year old. the florida sun has now worked its way on to the cab. so now a lot of the paint is crap. Suspension is crap. the only things good on that truck are the window tint and the stereo. and the motor. lol. But i rarley take it out.

Get the fabtech upper arm and sway away torsion bars. In my opinion its the best and cheapest way you can go for 3 inches of lift.

the fabtech setup you're talking about is for the front only? Does fabtech make a rear setup as well?

Any chance you've got an opinion on the ride quality?

thanks

the rear you can do a u bolt flip kit and maybe have to put longer shackles on. Thats cheap and reliable.

Here's the lift Travisfab is talking about. Clicky
My brother had this kit on my truck before I inherited it. He had 235/75/15's (like 29x9.50) with no rubing.

It comes with add-a-leafs for the rear, I don't know how much lift they give you but they are super stiff. I had them on my truck and hated it.

Lifting the rear for tire clearance is not a big deal, its the front you have to worry about.

Here's a picture of my truck with 33's and lift shackle. I've since moved on to bigger equipment, but the shackles did their job (I think they are downey shackles).

Here's a picture of the shackles I took off, I don't know the stock shackle length so I don't know how much lift these are.

I've got a bunch of pics of my truck when I still had the shackles if your interested in seeing them.

It was easier to just make an album on flickr. There's pictures of my truck through all its stages with different tires, ect.

5198: THANKS MAN!

I'm trying to get educated in this stuff, I come from the 'other side of the pond' - I've owned a motor swapped, high mod'ed supra and i've got a lightly mod'ed g35 now. I'm still a toyota man at heart.

Wanted to get this straight, for the rear, I can use what would essentially be a stock suspension and add the shackles for the 2 or 3" lift correct? I'm looking for an even rake - so I would essentially choose an even amount of lift for the front as for the rear. Would the shocks be affected? I'm assuming I should change those or downey's website was mentioning a bracket?

I'm going to do a little hunting for the Fabtech front kit only. I've heard the same thing about the rear add a leafs, and I'm trying to stay away from that. I'm not looking to get a back breaking ride out of this.

Just out of curiosity, I know Downey's been around for so long, is there a reason you wouldn't reccomend their front arm kit and sways?

thanks again guys.

by the way, in that picture on the off road warehouse website, if you were to take a stab at the wheel/tire size?

wheel brand and model?

For the rear, yes you can just ad the shackles without changing the shocks. The best thing to do would be get some bilstien replacement.
OEM replacement

I'd reccomend downey over fabtech.
Downey lifts

If your going for just a lift. Downey for the upper arms and Downey rear shackles and bilstein replacement shocks. This will increase performance.

If you want great performance you could go with a Total Chaos front end and downey or deaver replacement pack. For shocks you could go with fox 8" in the front and then get the "extended travel shock kit" (from downey) for the rear. Thats going to be expensive and require some fab work.

Total Chaos

im curious, what do the downey upper arms do? downeys site says "1989-newer models must use Downey 24mm torsion bars to crank-in lift. Toyota changed the indexing on the 1989-newer stock bars and they will not supply lift when using Downey’s control arms."
so what would be the difference if i were to just replace the torsion bars and not the arms?

Wheel and tire combo...

I would go with American racing rims. They are fairly cheap and look good.

15x7 3.75" B/S 5x4.5" bolt pattern
AR wheels

I personally like the AR23's.

Tire size with the downey upper arm: 30x9.50x15
Tire size with TC: 31x10.50x15

Its my understanding the angle of the upper arm is changed (BJ mounting plate is lower). They also place the BJ at a differnt angle (so its not maxed out from the lift)

But I feel aftermarket torsion bars are a must with whichever lift you go with.

In case anybody is watching this thread, I've exchanged emails with Fabtech and it turns out that the kit linked to (at ORW) is no longer in production.

Also, the truck shown in the picture was their 5-7 ivan dan long travel kit.
