You do not want a 3.0, you want to find a 3.4 and do a swap. You can search this site for more information on what else you will need, just type in 3.4 swap into the search box and plan on at least a day of reading.

Find a Tacoma or 3rd gen 4Runner in a junkyard and pull the 3.4 out of there. It'll be much cheaper than a brand new crate engine.

My advice would be to run the 3.0L until it dies and then do a swap. The 3.0L isn't a bad engine if you actually do maintenance on it. If he's just putting a new head gasket on it, it should be good for at least another 60 or 70,000 miles or until the truck rots out.

If you can deal with going slow you really want the 22re. A 3.0 can be a good motor depending on the life it has lived. The 3.4 will make more power but the 3.0 isnt as bad as some people make it out to be. I was a 3.0 hater until i owned one. I'm not saying i would rather have one than a 22re but i think i would take one over a 3.4. last time i checked the highest miles of anyone on yotatech was with a 3.0 shocker for sure lol! I had one with 180,000 miles as a off road only rig toward the end of my ownership. I'm suprised i didn't wear out the rev limiter lol!
