90' Manual to Auto swap

Yes the title is correct. I own a 1990 3VZE 4x4 p/u and i wanna swap the 5spd for an automatic. The reason for a swap is for safety and function, I was recently involved in a motorcycle wreck and I can't use my left side well hence my wants of swapping from a 5spd to automatic. The crappy part to this is about 12,000 miles ago I bought a whole new refurbished engine/trans so I barely just broke it in. In order for me to drive I need to have an auto and I rate one of those turning/death knobs on the steering wheel. My question for all of you is what transmissions out there are worthwhile for reliability and longevity in an automatic. I now would just mainly drive commuting to Dr. appts, school and therapy. All within a 50 mile radius with maybe an occasional 100 mile drive to see my folks. I also ride on a 3" suspension lift and 33" BFG all terrains. I don't want to spend my precious money buying a car...I would rather have my vehicle conform to my needs and keep my truck that's paid for and spend my money on something more important like my child. Would the stock auto tranny on a p/u suit me better or something else? I want to keep the transfer for 4x4 and want something that is reasonable to work on and reliable for I don't plan to stay like this forever. Thank you for any response.

Damn, dude, sorry to hear about your wreck. I did that once, got incredibly lucky, and still the most painful experience I've had.

You can swap in a stock auto, but you might need the ECU and wiring harness too, and the transmission cooler hoses + radiator with the cooler, other stuff. I know you've got a rebuilt engine, but can you trade with someone? How about buying an auto, swapping all your goodies to it (lift kit, wheels, engine), and selling the old one?

you will need a different driveline as well in the rear, maybe the front as well.

I would think that you would find a few people willing to trade you part for part though since that is the opposite of what most guys are looking to do.

1/2 the labor with someone would be a good deal and everyone wins!!

What is your location? Maybe post in the classified section and maybe Marlin's board as well.

I think that if you posted on enough forums you would find someone quickly that would trade everything and help swap it all. WHo wouldnt want a free 5speed swap??

You're going to need the transmission/tcase, driveshafts, wiring harness (full front section) ECU, and a fair bit of patience... If my 87 22re/w56 -> a340 is any indication

Cross members worked for me - no change required, just unbolt the w56's mount and install the A340's in its place. Find a donor at your local self serve wrecker, and cut out the transmission tunnel sheetmetal is radically different, use the ECU mount as a reference point. There's a bellcrank setup behind the transmission - either weld in the factory mounts or drill through and bolt it it without the proper mounts. The full harness swapout was really the worst of the change. Mechanically - it's an easy job, electrics were an absolute wh*re. God love toyota everything else you need for mounting points etc - is already there, just need to chase taps through to clean em up and read them for their new use...
