90 4r 3slow exhaust question

Maybe a newbie question, but why would the exhaust from plugs to front of cat be white, grey and black sooty cat back with stock exhuast? Need some suggestions for replacement exhaust also. Thinking about a low cost dynomax performance replacement. Any suggestions on this? Why do most recommend replace cat after 100k, mine still smells like it's working, smells like it should, not like raw gas on non cat cars and recommendations if need to replace on low cost free flow cats? Searched high and low in my area and haven't found anything yet, except some that can make a system, not sure about tuning value of these.

wow....hard to understand but I'll try to help

An easy way to test a Cat is to just bang it with something from the bottom and listen for a "rattling" sound. If you hear rattling or stuff shaking in there, it's toast.

Looked on their web and doesn't list full system for my rig.

Correction: Shows dynomax at 2" without intermediate pipe for $97 and a full catback 2.25" from Jardine for $267. Shows exit at rear, but would rather have it same place on side. I think having on side gives a little scavenging effect.

Let's see if I can explain better. Recently did some exhaust repairs, O2 sensor replacement and spark plugs changed.

Noticed plugs were white or grey in color. Same color at O2 sensor. After the Cat all the way to the tail pipe end is pure black. Curious as to why it burns so clean until it hits the cat and turns black all the way to tailpipe. You would think it would be grey all the way back.

Other part is a recommended exhaust system replacement, low cost.

Also curious as to why some say to replace cat after 100k, Have never heard of them wearing out. Replacement may be necessary if clogged, but that's the only reason I could think of why you would replace. I'm all for a free flow cat, but I thought all of them were not very restrictive in the first place.

I have found a local muffler shop willing to make a cat back system for me and was questioning the results. It certainly couldn't be a very well tuned exhaust system, cheap though if sound is all you care about.

Don't want loud. Using a scale of loud and quiet, would want in the middle.

Cats clog up, over time. The idea is that they get hot enough to get the bad emissions to create a chemical reaciton inside the cat, which changes them into less harmful emissions. The residue left over from the chemical reaction inside the cat and pipe, coat the linings. That's why they need to be replaced when they hit high mileage.
