90 3.0 4RUNNER stopped and will not start again

Just bought a 90 4runner with 3.0 and 5 speed 4x4. Has total chaos long travel so I overlooked the 3.0 and I like the older body style.
Had cel on when I bought it and ticking coming from fuel rail on drivers side ran good and ruled out lifter noise because it didn't speed up with engine speed. wife decided to drive it.
she was shifting into 3rd when she said the motor started dying, after questioning her it sounded like the engine just stopped and she was coasting,

when i towed it home I found the battery had dropped a cell, got a new battery and tried to start it, cranks but won't start, hooked up timing light have spark checked power to fuel pump and it has power, so fuel pump is bad the weird thing is I sprayed some starting fluid in it and it did nothing, anything else I should look at?

I like the older body style better.

Most likely either your compression is shot or enough starting fluid didn't make it down to the combustion chambers [it's a long way on the 3.0 manifolds].

Fuel has to be under pressure. spray can is not going to do anything other that displace much needed air. Replace pump. JMO

thanks guys it was just weird that the battery and pump failed at the same time. I hate throwing parts at something to get it running will get some pics up when it's running.

well have fuel pressure now and still won't start checked cold start and only spraying out one side, and when I line up TDC mark on crank pulley the dist is nowhere near #1 on cap. Did the timing belt jump does the dist drive off the cam on that side. gonna pull the dist tomorrow to look at it.anyway to check timing belt without tearing it all apart?

turn the motor over one more time and see if its is on number one then. also leave the cap off as u turn it and u can see if the timing belt is broke or not, i would look over the fuses and see if any might be blown.

it could of jumped teeth on a cam or something, i would pull the top cover and check it. i know its a pain but until u do check the timing u will never know, the only way the dist would be off is if someone pulled it and then put it back in, its gear driven. but it sounds like something gave way and u jumped timing,

Broken timing belt?

Have you checked for codes? I'd do more troubleshooting before throwing parts at it....

EDIT: never mind; I see you said the distributor is turning. Sure sounds like the belt jump timing, but that is exceedingly rare unless your belt idler spring broke. Pull the front cover off.
