Iv got a 90 2wd extended cab that my father in law gave to me it was bought new by him in 90.I have been knocking around the idea of converting it to 4wd if thats even feasible.I know the transmission would have to be changed to get the transfer case,and the front axle and driveshaft but i was wondering what else would have to be done.Its a clean well running little truck no rust southern truck,

 

I don't think the '90 had the A340H transmission (which has a matched transfer case), so the transfer case you need bolts onto the transmission. You'll need a new rear driveshaft. You'd also need to replace almost all of the front end components (control arms, steering knuckle, and probably the rest of it too). Shifters. You'd need the front differential, and unless you locked up the ADD you'd need the control circuitry for the ADD (vacuum valves and piping, and some electrical).

Sounds like a mighty big job. And once you're done, you have a 25-yr old 4wd truck. Is it worth it?

Sell the 2WD and put the dough towards a 4WD? A 5 speed xtra cab with low miles is a decent valued truck, if it's in good shape.

 

I've seen mini-trucks converted to V8 engines with Jeep 4x4 drivetrains. It depends what you want to spend.

 

yea not exactly low miles,300,000 on the truck 80,000 on rebuilt engine and paint is fadded but its a really good little truck and it has power steering which is nice.

 

Still, you can knock something off buying a 4WD outright. Certainly more than enough to compensate for making it a 4WD yourself!

But, a 2WD truck is a great little around town rig. If running right it should get pretty decent fuel economy. The 2WDs are super easy to handle, steer, shift, etc. We love the '82 long bed for city driving.
