It's just the reverse light switch, there's no other electronics on the whole transmission.

Polarity doesn't matter on switches so you can hook it up one way or the other.

On my w-56, there are two wires. The one on the drivers side is the reverse light, it goes over the top of the transmission and plugs into the harness. So when it came out on mine, it was drooping down on the passenger side. After plugging it back in, the reverse lights worked. There is also a wire on the passenger side, I'm not sure if its a fluid level or a temp gauge.

The reverse light is next to the fill bolt, wraps over the transmission and plugs into the harness with one RED wire and one RED/WHITE striped wire.

The other wire on the transmission is black on the passenger side, much higher and further back. I believe this is the 4x4 indication wire.

hope this helps

Thanks for answering my question b/4 I posted. My problem is that the tranny was swapped and the back up light connection is too short and they don't match. The "rear" connection only has a connector on the harness the connector from up top is a bare wire.
