Does anyone know how to identify an Auto diff option for an 89 4Runner. I have the 22RE with the automatic transmission and it is acting weird. I have looked for a used one but they ask if it has the auto diff option.

How can I tell? It's a 340H trans.

When the gear shifter is put into "D" the truck won't move. If I pull it into Low 1, then it will go and you can bump it up to Drive at around 15 mph and it will drive great. Once you slow down, you have to manually pull it down to Low 1 to take off again.

Any help would be appreciated.

89 4Runners never had an ADD system....they only had Auto hubs, or Manual Hubs.

sounds like either the shift computer, or the shift solenoids are bad.

Junkyards and the www.car-part.com website ask if it has auto diff.

Two transmission shops said the trans would have to be rebuilt. I thought it might be a solenoid too.

I bought the truck with a blown engine and put in a new 22RE. Then I found out the owner had towed it 115 miles with the back wheels on the ground and the driveshaft not removed. Maybe this damaged something.

If I get a used trans, I guess I ask for one without ADD?

seems to be a common problem with the auto transmission to have electrical problems causing it not to shift on its own. mine does the same i just manually shift it. i haven't found the time to troubleshoot it but i have heard of others fixing their problems with new solenoids and one other was fixed with a new tps. pull the codes to see what it is telling you the problem is. there is a diagnostic terminal near the ignition coil. just take a wire and insert it into the plug and ground it to something in the engine bay and your overdrive light will flash the codes.

 

sounds like trouble in the valve body.

 

ADD Stands for Automatic Disconnecting Differential, which is different from Automatic Hubs.
