89 4runner auto trans fluid change

Bought a 89 4runner with auto trans. Previous owner has no record of any tranny servicing. Is it safe to do a fluid change or does this trans react like a GM and "not leave the garage" as I've heard can happen?
Thanks for the replies.

Just use non synthetic Dexron ATF when servicing your trans. and don't worry these trannys are bullet proof.

Yes and be sure not to overfill it. The owner's manual is your friend.

I forgot to mention the mileage in case it matters. Approx 190k. And yes, I love repair manuals!

As long as the transmission is working normally (no excessive rough shifting, gears sliping) you should be fine. If there are issues but the transmission is working, I would not mess with it as changing the ATF when regular maintenance was not done could kill it.
