89 4Runner 3VZE missing? help?

My 89 4Runner feels like its missing intermittently. Sometimes it will run rough, other times it will run strong....well as strong as the motor allows.

New cap, rotor, plugs, wires were done 200 miles ago.

AFM was replaced with one from a junk yard.

As previously mentioned it feels like it misses then seems to correct itself a few miles down the road, then intermittently sometimes will do it again.

Any ideas? Stuck valve? bad AFM? bad TPS? what else could it be?

I'm not getting any check engine light.... and yes the light is working.

I just checked the timing and it was right at top dead center 0 give or take a degree. Readjusted timing to 10-12 BTDC.

Would that amount of miss timing be a cause to my problem? (Really hope so, seeing as that was the cheapest fix)

Ok, timing the engine seemed to help, but only for a little while after parking it in the garage for about 30 minutes, got back on the road, 5 miles later same rough running problem arose.

Stopped and got a new coil... any thoughts?

I have the same problem did you get it fixed?

My 94 4x4 with 3vze is doing the same thing. It has 175k all plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor button are less than 6 months old. Did you ever come up with a fix?

The fix that seemed to help was a new coil. I also thought an injector might have been the problem, so I dumped some cleaner in the tank. In the end I really believe that the coil was just putting out a weak spark and numerous cylinders would misfire at inopportune times. I think this is why it was intermittent. Try a coil, its only about 25 bucks and is a good thing to replace anyways, let me know how it works out.
