'89 22RE Rebuild
So the engine in my truck is flat worn down. PO ran it with a bad thermo, rod noise, piston slap, and a leaky head (not sure if its the gasket or a warped head). I've been driving little bits but I have to constantly dump oil and coolant in every morning.
So I bought an old '89 to rebuild. Just ordered the kit from engnbldr, 020 over pistons, 268° .425 cam, stainless O/S valves .033.
I'm just curious what kind of power and milage you guys would think I might get. We're doing the whole thing, bought the whole kit yesterday, and having everything done at the machine shop as soon as I get the parts.
Opinions?

Best I have ever got on my 89 Extra cab is 24mpg highway with 31" tires. By changing the cam I bet you will never see that milage. These engines are not that effiecent. Most people see 15-20 mpg and a bit higher if all you do is drive highway.
Power wise they are no V8. I love the power in my truck but some people think they are dogs. It depends on what you expect of a 4 cylinder with 2 valves per jug, not much......

24.9mpg is my best. that was with stock tires and 4.88's. i am at 23.9mpg with the 31'' maxxis tires. i am just now starting to replace worn out vacuum lines so maybe i can get 25mpg. also, when i sell the 4runner i will slap a LCE header on.

between highway and city driving, my 22re with 256000 miles(closer to 278,000) gets an average of 19 per gallon. though when i went to san diego for xmas, it got about 23 to the gallon
