i think that on the older EFI system it just used either the signal from the distributor or the coil for monitoring engine speed.

the later EFI distributor looks pretty close to the carbed/analog one other than the fact that it doesn't have the advance guts in them. both appear to have the same kind of pickup coil/reluctor in them. 1 tooth on the reluctor for each cylinder.
