Angry 88 4Runner Help !

Ok here goes....I have a 88 4Runner with a Manual Transmission and last week it was -55 up here. I was late for work so I did not let it warm up as much as I should have. I tried to back out of the driveway and it would barely move the revs went up but the truck just slowly crawled. There was also lots of white smoke which smelled like burning rubber. I figured it was probably the clutch but the strange thing is the 4wd shifter is now stuck in 4hi. Making me think it's the transfer case ?? Any input would be greatly appreaciated before I order parts. I live way up North soo I gotta be sure before ordering.

awesome 4runner gotta love them 1gens and second off welcome to yotatech! have you checked the fluid for the tranny and xcase next off what could be going on and im not to firmilar with temps that low so i would think that maybe the fluid was jus so cold that it was almost gell and that would make it hard for you to move and if the clutch was buring i dont think you would smell it out of the exhast more between the motor and tranny and you would prolly be seeing smoke coming from that part. my next guess would be maybe you had some moisture on the clutch that froze and you simply just had to break it free or it siezed togther and thats why it was so hard to move.

Got the hubs disengaged now. I thought it could have been froze as well but I parked it in a heated garage and the problem still persists ?

That's my homemade snorkel rivited to the hood !

55 deg really schould not hurt trans or transfer case much but like said before ck fluid also when did you put it in 4 hi before or after maybe you messed up linkage 4 4wheel try manually doing it and smoke like stated above will be caused by moisture and temperature when its cold you will get that steam smoke crap coming out

I think it was the clutch slipping, due to frozen parts in the tranny/clutch mechanism.. The fact that it was soo cold means anything could have frozen..

You really have to warm your truck up and inspect it before you can know whats going on.. I suspect frozen brakes or bearings, and ice from condensation on your clutch causing it to slip..

I wish you luck..

Beautiful 4Runner by the way.. Very clean!

Howdy. I had similar problems with my 75 chevy and my 86 toy, and only got out of 4x4 by goin on reverse for a few yards (FAST) then stop and try to move the shifter. may need to do it a few times, it's the only way Ik. good luck.

Going in reverse will help to "unload" or unbind the drive lines
