Hello everyone, just bought my first Toyota ever (also one of my dream trucks) - A 1988 4runner 5 spd manual 22RE.
I have wanted one of these trucks since I was a kid and finally came around to buying one for $2,000. I think it's in pretty good shape for an east coast truck. Definitely needs to be restored but is a worthy project. Has 183,000 miles on it and runs pretty good. Frame looks good, a little scaly but no soft spots or holes on the frame. Fenders, quarter panels, and rockers need some TLC but overall not horrible, I've seen worse. The only thing keeping me from driving it right now is the fan/alternator belt. If anyone could help me out with some dimensions or other info that would be awesome. I've been to O'Reilly's, Auto zone, Napa, Rock auto, and some other places, they all show me a belt that is too thick and way too short. I don't know what the deal is, maybe I'm just an idiot. I'll probably end up getting a measurement with rope around the pullies. Sorry if this has been an already addressed issue, I'm new. Will post more pics soon. Thanks everyone!
I've bought parts from these guys. there are others. I tend not to screw around with Autozone, etc. etc. anymore. You could try rockauto. com too. Only downside is returns if necessary, although (fingers crossed) I've never had to with Olathe. Recently replaced radiator and the two hoses on my '89 2wd, 5spd, 22RE, no aircon, etc. You have to be careful to provide complete vehicle description. VIN is best.
Rockauto "Spectra Premium" radiator, Genuine hoses from olathe. Hoses perfect, radiator OK except not perfect fit and no drain tube at the plug.
Maybe yours does not have original pulley. V-belts come in different cross section dimensions as well as lengths. The wrong one might work, but won't give acceptable service lfe w/o squeals, slippsge, etc .

If you can find Bando belts, I believe the alternator / fan / water pump v-belt is Bando 2345, according to their parts catalog: http://www.showmetheparts.com/bando/
not that its very complicated, but make sure your picking the belt for the proper engine, driven attachments, and routing it properly. congrats on the runner
Turns out I’m just an idiot haha. The belt I got from the parts store was the right one after all. When I changed the alternator lastnight, I realized all I needed to do was pivot it a little to the left and the belt slipped right on. Thank’s anyway everyone for the assistance. Just filled er up, here’s a few rusty pics with the top off.
Hey, awesome truck in the most awesome color (I also like black trucks)
Welcome!
Make sure that belt is on right and tight. The water pump also runs on the alternator belt. So:: if you ever drive down the road and the lights dim / battery indicator goes down - stop ASAP and check if the belt is on there. You can of course have a bad alt - but if you don't check you might have an overheated engine.
Finally made some time to work on the Rust runner. I feel bad for neglecting it all summer, but since things slow down in the winter I decided to make a little progress.
First time washing it since I’ve owned it haha. Goodbye ole rusty Not a perfect fit yet, gotta replace the bolts I sheered and shave off some material where it meets the door. It’s a pain in the neck to open it now.
Thanks. After I adjust the ignition timing and install new shocks and leaf springs, I’d like to have a shop cut and repair the rear quarter panels. Once the body is all cleaned up and painted, I can focus on modifications instead of repairs.
so I’ve finally saved up enough to start restoring. I have a guy cutting and replacing panels so I can kiss all that body rot goodbye. The frame is also getting cleaned up, painted, and coated with fluid film. Once the body and frame are done, I’m getting my 22RE completely machined and rebuilt. Should all be finished in a couple months. I can’t wait to have this baby looking clean like it just rolled out of the 80s.
