88 4Runner charcoal canister: Purge hose.

88 4Runner 3.0

I was under the hood today and I realized a vacuum hose that was unplugged. There are two lines coming off the top of the canister, one that says "to tank" and the other says "purge". I routed the hose back to the "purge" side. When looking at the back of my engine I saw a place to plug it back in and did so. Is that "purge" hose suppose to run to the back of the engine? And what does it do?

Yep, to the "Purge" port on the throttle body:

Hint: The Purge port has a "P" next to it:

The other two are the E and R ports that ultimately hook to the E and R ports of the EGR modulator. The Factory Service Manual has all the information on those. Basically, those ports are just at different locations relative to the throttle plate. So they become active as various throttle positions.

And I labeled both ends of each of my hoses (that is the little white strips on the vacuum lines in the photo above). While those lines may look like a plate of spaghetti at first glance, they are actually very logically laid out and it only takes a little time to understand what each one does and where it goes.
