88 4 runner transmission noise, possible causes?

I have an 88 4 runner and hear whining from the truck while speeding up. It makes noise while acelerating and holding speed but letting off the gas and the noise goes away. But it doesnt make noise in 4 at all but I feel a little buzz in the shift lever when shifting to 4. The noise is enough that even at 30 in 3rd gear my bluetooth is too noisy for people to hear me but if I push the clutch in it gets quiet.

Also I can hear a rattle or chatter noise at idle when in neutral and the clutch is out but it goes away if I press the clutch.

I think the noise at idle is probably the release bearing but the other noises have me confused like why it doesn't make any noise in 4.

I haven't had it long so didn't think much about the noises cause I used to drive an old mazda and it whined all the time but lasted years but then I rode in a friends toyota and thought about how quiet it was compared to mine.

If I need to replace or rebuild the trans, how much should I expect to pay?

If I have to replae the trans, I'm going to do the clutch too so any suggestions?

Thank you.

Those are your bearings needing to be replaced. Mine is doing the same thing in all gears except 4th.

In the SF Bay area, used from a private party have been going between $250 and 500 usually with the t-case too. I would not pay any higher than $400 with the t-case, otherwise might as well buy from a shop. Shops have been selling a used tranny (no t-case) for $500 with 6month warranty. If you can afford it, most everyone recommends buying a tranny from www.marlincrawler.com. Marlin rebuilt trannys come with a 1yr/unlimited mile warranty.

If you can do it yourself, then the above prices is all you'd pay. If you need to pay someone to do it, add another $350 at least for the labor to install. Shops will charge you between $1100 to $2000 to rebuild your tranny with warranty.

The prices I have given you is what I have found myself as I have to replace my tranny also.

Since the tranny is coming down anway, it is recommended to replace the rear main seal, clutch, clutch slave cylinder.

Good luck to you too!!

If you're getting noise in all gears but 4th (direct pass through the tranny), I'd almost guarantee you have bearings going south. Pull the drain plug & see if you have pieces of bearings~

was told the gear oil was changed less than a year ago replaced with 90W. guess I've got to get under it.

i need it to last a few more months. would adding lucas help or drain and go to heavier oil, or both?

thanks

If it's the bearings, no gear oil in the world will help you now....

How can I determine which trans is in it? I believe it's a w56b. engine is 22re.
Any other options for replacing it, interchange without problems?

Transmission compatability question: 4wd, 91 trans on 88

Is it possible to mate a transmission from a 91 truck with 3vze engine to an 88 22re? obviously have to change bellhosing, but anything else? input shaft? use transfer case from 88 on 91 trans? any problems with shifter locations?

I have post about noise from my trans here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...causes-244170/ and am looking for a replacement but don't know my options.

do you have the 22re or the 3.0. the 3.0 can use r150, r151 trans and the the 22re can use G, W and R151 trans. the R151 is the the v6 model trans with gear driven t-case

I have an 88 4Runner with 22re. From what I've read elsewhere, I should have the W56- b trans, right? so, no v6 trans will work?

the easiest way is to look and see if t-case shift is on the trans or t-case. if its on the t-case it's the W series if its on the trans its the G series. Here's i good place to look for one if nobody on the forums are selling them. www.car-part.com

thanks.
I was hoping it was something simple like a code on the door like they have for the gears or something like that.

Lol the transmission code is on the door jamb right next to the gear ratio code.

would still be nice to know what transmissions would be most easily put in mine- you know, like the title of my post asked?

if its has a 56b, would a c or d go in with the shift levers in the same place the body holes are?

If you want the v6 engine, you need the v6 trans & xfer case. If you want the v6 trans with a 22re engine you need an r151f bell housing so you can use the r150f & chain drive (vf1a)case of the v6 engine, unless you can find a complete r151 w/ gear xfer case.

Marlin crawler will sell you an r151 trans and you can use the rf1a gear xfer case. But its not cheap. So the answer is no unless you have $$$ to get the 22RTE parts to make it work.

yes it can bolt up if you get a bellhousing from an r151f bolted to the r150 v6 trans. you'll lose your gear drive tcase though

Thanksfor the answers guys. I'd like to keep my transfer case just 'cause it's mine but who knows... is the shifter for the case in the same location as the gear case? I dont want to have to mod the body just for that.

Yet another trans question from me

I have posts here asking about transmission compatibility and another here about problems with my 88's transmission.

I have a possible line on W56 transmission and transfer case from an 87 22re. Since I need a new trans, I'm thinking this may be a good time to do a dual case setup. I could buy the one I'm looking at and use my case for the dual, right?

What am I looking at getting myself in to? New trans crossmember, poking holes in my floorboard, driveshaft mods... ? How much down time doing it?
