88 22r no spark with 12V to coil
Hello All,
This 88 pickup slid down a boat ramp and was submersed up to the dash!!
Dried it out, got engine running for about three weeks. Now engine turns, with no spark thus no start. Plugs, wires, rotor, signal gen, and all related fuses replaced. Primary and Sec coils check out and as a secondary test were swapped into a working truck and the problem DID NOT FOLLOW.
I am presuming my coil pack is intact. I get power read from in the "on" position yet, power drops out when engaging the "start sequence" at the ignition switch. I checked all the grounds I could find for corrosion etc.
Timing chain is fine;-)
Any suggestions out there?

Hey rabbitt... this 22r is in a 88 pickup. No comp to speak of so no codes to check. Mech fuel pump too...which btw pumps fuel no prob. Am I missing something? Thanks for the reply

Hello abe... yes the ignitor was checked according to oem spec and tested fine. As a second measure I installed the assy into another 88 22r and the engine started. I am somewhat confident the ignitor and coil assy is working ok.

I thought you said that in your OP but wasn't 100% sure since you didn't say "igniter".
I know you said your's is a carb'd 88 and no ECU... BUT... there is probably a computer in the kick panel on the passenger side. It handles O2 and some of your timing control. I don't believe it can throw trouble codes like the EFI ones do but it's worth checking.

HI abe.. yeah, I had the dash and all panel;s apart when I dried the truck out. All connectors apart etc etc. Anyway, pax side panels in this truck contain nothing more than a heater assy that I could ascertain. All that got pulled he heater works like a charm now apart dried and sprayed...
I will take another look see just in case. Very interesting problem I have here!!

update to no spark issue
Still no spark issue on this 22r. Parts replaced since last posts:\
distributor . No luck
swapped out ECU box into a working truck (problem did not follow).
Swapped ignitor AND coil into a working truck (again) problem did not follow. Starter was replaced as a punt.. No luck.
Ignition switch assy bench tested for continuity and megged: checked good no resistance or short to grounds detected.
Seems my problem is in the harness somewhere.
Note, I seem to get some spark (sometimes) after releasing the ignition switch
Yep, Distributor is aligned at TDC ..
Anyone????

Ignition switch then, as it was submerged also, even though it checked fine, can you hot-wire it?
I am sure you double-grounded engine by now.

Hello Sixstring,
Suppose the ign switch could be the culprit..I did not hot wire.... How???
Did not "double Ground" ...cleaned and brushed everything very well. And checked most grounds for cont. with no issues found.
My gut tells me it is the ICM and I see the work around with the GM parts (which went up 20 bucks since 2008). But..... I swapped my coil and ICM as a unit into another truck and it started the truck no problem...... I am reluctant to drop $$ for no good reason right;-)

update.
Well,
A test lead direct from bat to B-R wire to ICM Allows for a smooth start and successful run. This is the case whether I jump start or key start.
SO, all mechanical seems clear and the ICM and Coil seem to work fine.
My prob seems to be from the ign switch out to the ICM/Coil
gettin there.

Problem SOLVED!
Turned out to be the ignition switch! I ohmed this thing out early on and surmised solid continuity meant it was good to go.... NOT THE CASE. I NEVER put 12v to it and tested for power.... simple oversight that cost me time and unnecessary work;_)
Hope this helps another;-)
