88 22r Fuel pump problem.

For starters, the fuel pump was leaking gas out of the vent hole, or whatever the hole is called, and by leaking gas, I mean it was LEAKING gas, I was getting like 7-8 mpg, and to make matters worse, when I went to take off the two mounting bolts, BOTH damn bolts snapped off inside the block. I bought a new fuel pump before I snapped the bolts, but I just need to know, is it leaking because it's broken? Or is it doing that because of another problem elsewhere in the engine?

Thanks in advance for your feedback guys.

It was bucking and bogging down too, and I've been able to smell the gas all along, just never knew where it was coming from until now...

If the gas is coming out of the weep hole on the fuel pump then its bad. The diaphragm in the pump has ruptured.

If gas is coming out the vent hole it is bad. You need to check the oil to see has gas in it also.
